Slow Modem

My Aunt has a computer with a 56k modem. Acouple of weeks ago it started messing up. Now it only connects at around 32 kbps sometimes 40. It used to connest at 52. We have the same internet (Peoplepc) and mine it fine what could it be?

Was there some other piece of telephone equipment installed there lately? Like an answering machine, or a different phone? Can you try another phone jack, or try a different access number?

It sounds like a line noise problem to me.

Actually they did put in a new phone I'll try disconnecting it.
