Slow Modem Connection?! Whats going on! Help me!

I have two modems which are both different, BUT connect at the same speed to the internet! Same ISP and telephone line. One is a USR Winmodem Voice 56K, and the other is a Compaq built in laptop modem. They both connect at a maximum of 33,600 to the internet. I have called the phone company to increase my gain, and no difference. I have also downloaded all latest drivers and flashed them with whatever I can find but nothing still the same speed!

Please help me out!

The problem lies with your ISP. What connection speed did you subscribe with them?

56K Connection. Thats the speed I subscribed with them!

Try setting the Max Connection Speed to anything higher than 33600 bps.

I have it set to maximum speed = 115200!!! So it can't be that!

Does your ISP support the v.90 standard assuming both your modems do so?

Both my modems are pretty old so I guess they are not V.90 which is why I max out at 33,600!!!

Edit: the ISP would becasue it is the largest in the U.K so I think they would support V.90!

A2KLAU, sounds like BT has DACSed your lines! in everyday terms they've got 2 lines out of the 1 you originally had thereby lowering the speed on both lines for your modem. the problem is the line not your modem.
IMO,very sneaky thing to do especially as they don't warn you of this even though they advertise getting the 2nd line for the internet!

If your modems are too old, that is your problem. For the USR modem, open Hyperterminal with a direct connect to your modem port and type ati7. You will get some info back.

As you can see, this model has V.90 support. I'm not sure what model modem is in that Compaq, but there will be a similar command. If you are getting a 33.6 connect on a V.34 modem, you have a good quality line, and likely can get a nice connect with a V.90 modem.

Hyperterm is optional at Windows install. If you have it, it will be under accessories or accessories/communications. Here is another way. Go to Control Panel/Modems/Diagnostics/More info. That will give you the info as well.

Same thing happen here...i use to get 53k connection when i only have one line...but since i ordered the 2nd one...they split it somehow so i only get 26k connection and sometimes 28k max. 2 weeks ago i ordered telocity DSL...i havent got the modem yet...but somehow they just managed to fix both of my phone lines to go at 53k again...i am still on dial up...but hopefully that dsl will come soon.

first off, let me recommend you to a great site "56k.com. This site has a great message board and tons of info on what could be causing your problem. I am pretty sure its your isp though. Here's what you do, go to different isps websites and get as many local access numbers as you can. then open up hyperterminal and dial into each number to test the speed. wherever you connect highest is the best isp for you!!

This is likely his problem. If his modems are not V90 capable, nothing will help until he gets one.

Oldfart ,I talked to him about this, &amp; it does appear his modem is too old so he is going to buy a new V90 modem.
