Slow Log-off

This problem started a couple months ago and made it nearly unbearable to shutdown/restart/log-off my pc. The logging off process would take about a minute to complete, and that was quite a change from the usual five seconds.

Today I reinstalled XP Pro to get rid of Service Pack 1, and the problem was gone (of course.) But then I installed some drivers, and the problem reared its ugly head, yet again. The drivers in question ... nVidia's Detonator 44.03. Uninstall them? Tried that, I even went to an older Detonator version 42.30 with no luck. Then I went to the original drivers that Microsoft provided with Windows XP for my GeForce II MX. That also failed to fix the problem.

I've searched the web for this problem. The problem is identified in EventLog as a program or service trying to access the registry while the computer is shutting down. The only programs I've found on the net that have been reported to cause the problem are: Norton Anti-Virus and nVidia's Driver Helper Service. I currently do not have NAV installed or the aforementioned service enabled. I am really becoming irritated at this problem and am willing to install XP again, but instead I decided to ask the people at Anandtech to see if they've seen this problem before, and if they possibly know a solution.

Thanks,
Will K.

Hi there, have you tried running something like spybot search and destroy to remove any spyware you might have on your machine? I used to have this problem which was put down to 'gator' one of the ad-ware progs which install with the likes of Kazaa.

My problem was that double clicking on anything remotely useful (ie. my computer on desktop!) was followed by a 30 second wait!! once i ran spybot all was ok....

Just an idea.

Also. Do you have a logitech internet SE keyboard? If you have and you have installed the driver that's DEFINITELY the problem.... there's a known issue on this keyboard which hangs the logoff process for around 30secs. I have this keyboard and was pulling my hair out until i found what it was.

The computer just had Windows installed and I'm quite selective on software being installed. So spyware wouldn't be present on the system (unless a family member went "Yes"-button click-happy).

I do have a Logitech Elite Keyboard. I'll try turning that off next time I shut down my pc (I'm an internet gateway so it's a little hard to find time :p) But that doesn't surprise me, Logitech was never known for their fantastic software :p.

Try this...

Start > Run > gpedit.msc

In Group Policy Editor, drill down to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > System > Logon and change "Maximum retries to unload and update user profile" to "Enabled," and give it a value of 5 (seconds).

I looked where you mentioned and I could not locate the setting. I tried fooling around with commands and seeing if Microsoft hid it by default, but that came to no avail.

Do you have "Hotfix Q329441" in your Add/Remove Programs? If so uninstall it and see if it helps your shutdown time.

Forgot to add, do you have iTouch software? Used only for LogiTech keyboards?
