Slow loading times.

My games load up really slowly the first time and to load the maps/levels, but then after that it's fine. I heard that its loading from for the first time uses the hard drie, and was recommended to defrag. I defragged using Perfect Disk and did everything including metadata. However, still it seems to load slowly. What could be the problem? Could not having a lot of free space be the cause of the problem? I can't remember though, if I had this problem when it was a clean install, but I don't think I did. Also, running things in windows just seems to be slower than what it was before.

One possibility: you might check is the size of your paging file. Maybe it's too small?

For Windows XP you set it by going to :

Start / Right click on My Computer and select Properties / Advanced tab / Performance settings button / Advanced Tab / Virtual Memoory Change button

Set it to Custom and the size at say maybe 2046 MB Min and also same value 2046 MB Max, then pres the Set button.

I just set it to the recommended amount which was 3069 MB and it doesn't seem to have helped at all. Could it be because of my anti-virus? I'm using ESET NOD 32 and I think it scans everything when it opens or launches but I'm not sure.

Could be, I don't know. I haven't used ESET NOD 32.
Somewhere in its settings you may be able to tell it to only scan new or changed files. That's how I set it in Kaspersky 7.

As an experiment to see if trouble isolates to NOD 32, disconnect from internet access, completely close ESET NOD 32, then try your game. But be sure internet access is shut off before you do this.

Any difference?

NOD 32 is one of the fastest anti-virus suites around so it shouldn't be that much of an impact to performance - especially as far as windows feeling less snappy in general.

Not so much in windows, or when I'm actually playing the game but when its loading its really slow when its being read off of the hard drive. From when I checked it seems to be scanning everything, so I was thinking maybe it scans it before it lets it load up or something which makes it slower?

Also is there a way to change it in NOD32 to make it only scan new or changed files?
