slow hard drive

JBT

Lifer
I have been running the newest version of Sandraand noticed that in the "File System Benchmark" my maxtor D740X 7200 rpm 40 Gig gets a drive index of 18,488kbs which is slower than a 30 gig 5400 drive in the bench mark which is suppose to get a drive index of 20,000kbs. So my question is why the hell is it so slow? it has been like that for as long as I can remember. Today I have disable auto acustic managment thinking that is may make it faster but nothing.... any help is appreiciated thank you.

I checked and the drive definatly doesn't need to be defragged and DMA is enabled. well it is "DMA if availiable" The drive is also the primary master So it should be running at ATA 133/100 what ever it is shouldn't matter any though.

Are either of your HDs sharing a channel with an optical drive? Is the Optical drive running in PIO Mode?

Thorin

I do have an optical drive on the channel, in the device manager for my first channel I have the option of DMA if availible which I have chosen. I just ran the bench mark again and my old 20 GB 5400 WD gets a better score. I have no idea what I am doing wrong here. any more help would be great thanks.

I belive I have done that before along time ago to test it, well last time the score annoyed me a few months ago I eventually forgot about it. I don't mind the performance as of now. But if it is possible to be faster I would want to try to get it there. I will try it on the channel alone tomarrow when I get a chance.

Good point SClark.

JBTele have your run the manufacturer's testing utils on them yet? Have you run SpeedFan (or similar) to see what it reports from the drive's SMART.

Thorin

actaully I have tried running maxtors testing utilities on it. and iit doesn't even recognize the drive. but it is recognized in maxtors acutic mangment utility. I always have SMART "enabled" and it says it is fine. but I can try this smartfan program too.
