Slow GTX280?

I'm playing Company of Heroes with my rig below ( sig) on my old 17" monitor - 1280*1024 ( the 24" monitor that I want is out of stock ATM). I maxed out all settings, except AA and AF which I set both to 4x ( AF done under NVCP). I get 50-60fps most of the time ( I think there is a frame cap of 60fps, I turned off vsync), but during heavy load ( lots of bombing/smoke) I get as low as 30fps.

Given that CoH is a 2 year old game ( and developed for the 7 series card), is my GTX280 performance sub-par, or am I likely to be CPU limited? ( running the GTX280 at stock speed - anyone know of a good, reliable OC tool for GPUs?). I'm kinda worried that this card is not enough for 19*12, even if I turn off AA/AF. I have 3 more days to exchange this card for a 4870X2 ( with a small restocking fee), should I do it?

are you using some kind of exotic AA method or DX 10?

I'm pretty sure CoH is not that hard on current high end PCs.

took me a while to find it but here's a link with a CoH benchmark comparison

I had multisampling set under NVCP, and yes, I'm using DX10 ( how much harder is it to run on DX10 compared to DX9?)

MUCHO more.

If you run DX9, it will run 100+FPS even with max AA and AF.

DX10 adds nice little effects so I use it instead of 9 with AA off.

I also play COH... but I have to play on DX9 instead of DX10. If i set it to DX10 no AA forget it... it lags big time... I play on 24" Monitor and have a 8800 ultra. This is the reason I'm planning to upgrade with GTX 295 next month... With upgrade I'm hoping to be able to play on DX10.

Doesn't look like a GTX280 has any sort of problem with CoH even at 19x12 with 8xAA.
I have a friend that has a GTX280 and plays at 19x12 and he tells me that he has to play on DX9 cause DX10 lags his game... Now I don't know if he sets crazy AA that he lags... dunno... That's why I'm waiting for GTX295 instead of GTX280.

4gb is a must for coh opposing fronts. it must have bad coding though cause its dx10 implentation is atrocious.

Thanks for the replies guys

Hmm.. isn't Multisampling the one that 'offers superior performance' ( quote from NVCP)?

@spike: It is done in NVCP. I think it's one of two methods of implementing AA... perhaps someone more knowledgeable can fill me in.

Well my CoH isn't patched to the latest version ( mine is 2.101; I've reached my internet cap for the month), maybe that's the case for your friend too. Hopefully keys is right after I get my game patched :)

From the 3 reviews ( espeacially the ones from keys), it seems that this game is quite dependant on the CPU - fps don't drop much from 12*10 to 19*12. I'll do some OC-ing tonight to verify this....( wish there's a way to get rid of the frame cap though).

but if you have a corei7 @ 3.05ghz then cpu speed is a moot point. U shouldnt need anything more powerful than the latest generation cpu to play a 2 year old game mate.
