for starters i'm building an htpc and i have run into a question what cpu to use.

i'm going to be using either 780G or the nv8200 gigabyte board

i will not be doing any multitasking
the system will stricly be use to record tv, watch dvds and blue ray disks, and play music.

since the chipset has hardware decode, is there any reason for me to go dual core (such as the X2 at 2.1ghz- 45W)

or would it be alright to go 2.6ghz single core at 45W which costs less?

My old single-core music server used to have ticks in the audio once in a while when Windows ran some other service / process that stole too much time from the music player. My current server is dual-core (just an X2 3800+) and that never happens.

So I'd vote for the slow dual-core.

Even if it is doing hardware encoding/decoding it still uses the CPU to a certain degree.
