Slow dropdown menus.

Whenever I try to open a file using MS Word or Excel, and click on the dropdown menu, my system locks up for about a minute and wont respond to anything.

Any idea why this is happening?
 
If you have a CD in the CD-ROM the computer first attempts to discover the name of the Disc so that it can display it in the drop down menu. Try removing all removable media from the computer and see if that helps.
