slow cpu?

First off I am running a AMD 4000+ 2.4ghz and a lot of the time while my system is just sitting on the desktop I get spikes of cpu usage that I can see in the task manager these spikes make it so I have to wait for minuets just to do simple tasks.. Please help

My first thought is that the problem is not with the CPU, but with some program that's running in the background. When looking at the Task Manager during these spikes, have you looked for the process that is running? If you can locate which it is, then a program such as Process Explorer may help you identify it with it's program.

Ace Utilities is a free download for 30 days. Download.com has it.

It has a interesting utility that checks what you got running when you bootup. It lists what's happening and allows you to pick and checkoff the extras you don't need immediately. You can still open them after boot, so you don't need the clutter that happens to everyone.

With that done, you will notice a faster bootup. There are other utilities, you may want to check. That said, AU will offer you a deal to purchase or quietly go inactive in 30 days.
