Resolved: The old modem died so comcast had to replace it.
New speed test: 8780 down / 353 up

I have tried to talk with the comcast people to fix my slow connection to no avail.

When I plug my computer directly to the cable modem I have no internet at all.

Through my Linksys WRT54GS I get:

dslreports.com speed test result on 2006-04-06 20:43:06 EST:
412 / 349
Your download speed : 412 kbps or 51.5 KB/sec.
That is 91.2% worse than an average user on comcast.net

Your upload speed : 349 kbps or 43.6 KB/sec.
That is 13.6% worse than an average user on comcast.net

Thanks.

the technician you speak to might not have all the information on your account. Do you do a lot of P2P downloading? in which case they might have limited your connection. For the most part the service technician wouldnt be aware of that from what I have heard.

If you are having problems connecting through the modem as well you could try getting a cheap replacement NIC to see if that makes a difference. also, clear your DNS entries in the command prompt by doing ipconfig /release, ipconfig /renew, ipconfig /flushdns while connected directly to the modem to see if that makes any difference.

when going from router/direct you need to pull the power on the modem for a minute. Doesn't Comcast have a colo speed test? I thought all ISP's did, if you dig a bit.

I know it is not my NICs, since both of my computers have this problem. My old computer I have a Linux Server on and I set it up on the other side of my router and was getting <1ms responce back from pinging it and file transfers are just as quick.

As for the ipconfig /* I have tried that already and it did not help.

Thanks anyways.

One of the comcast people are going to out to service the modem.

Spydermag, You need to reset the cable modem every time you switch which device it is hooked to.

If the modem is usally hooked to router then reset the modem after hooking the modem to your computer. After hooking it to your computer reset the modem after hooking it to your router again.

Your modem will not work for the new device until it is reset.

I have powered cycled the modem and the computers after conecting them to the cable modem. It did not help in my case. I would just not have any connection to the internet at all. As soon as I put the router into the mix I had limited functionality to internet.
