slow cdrom reading

I have an 8x4x32x ricoh cd writer and an Asus 50x cdrom.
If i use Nero to copy "on the fly" i get buffer underruns. My Asus 50x is my Primary Slave and my Burner is my Secondary Master. My HD is my primary master. Any ideas why this isn't working?

More troubling is when i do a cd->temp image->write using only the cd writer. It takes 8-10 minutes to read the cd and make the iso, and another 10 minutes to burn it to cd. How come it takes so long to read from teh cd if it is supposed to read at 32x, it should be like 3 minutes.
This is data copying, not audio.
These 2 problems are troubling, can anybody offer some advice?


also, what does GXP stand for in IBM's 75GXP and 60GXP?
 
UPDATE: my primary channel has my hard drive and my cdrom, both operating at UDMA, while my burner is on the secondary master and only running at DMA. Is there any way to get the burner to run at UDMA b/c i'm sure it's capable of it. WHy isn't this it's default?
 
buffer underrun problems: What else is going on while you burn? You should be able to "on-the-fly" without issue unless you have a slow system overall or you are doing something. (new burner w/buffer underrun prevention hardware is a very useful investment)

the reason that it takes longer than theoretical to image is due to the iso creation process. If you were just reading/ copying files you would be closer to those figures
 
well, i determined that i have a problem with my asus 50x cdrom. when i try to play an audio cd with winamp it just freezes. as for my 8x4x32x burner taking 12 minutes to write a temporary iso image, i still have no idea.
