Slow bootup in XP- DVD Rom spins like crazy?

Newly built system, gets to WinXP splash screen and then hangs for nearly a minute. DVD-Rom drive spins up and red light flashes. If I eject the drive (which is empty) then XP continues boot.

If there is a disc in the drive, things boot quickly. I know I could just leave a disc in, but what is causing the problem?

Any help appreciated.

Not likely...

System runs fine once booted, and it boots fine if their is a CD or DVD in the DVD-ROM drive at system startup. It even boots fine with no disc in the drive, it just takes forever. The DVD-ROM seems like it is looking for something, as the light is on and youcan hear it spin up.

There are NO other issues after boot. I can install apps from the drive and view movies with no problems.

DVD-ROM drive is master with a CDRW as the slave on secondary IDE channel. Mobo is and MSI K7N2 Delta L. DVD-ROM is a Raite (older drive) but all other components are proven, they came straight out of my box and went into this build for my son. HD was formatted and it is a clean install of XP Home.

Okay, I'm stumped!

I've checked (and replaced) the cable, although I found no issues. I've checked the Master/Slave jumpers on both optical drives which were correct, but I've now set both jumpers to "Cable Select".

I have adjusted the BIOS boot sequence to EVERY possible configuration possible on this machine with this hardware. Currently it is set to HD-0 then CD-ROM. The third option is disabled as is the floppy, as there is no floppy drive installed on the machine. Floppy Drive controller is disable.

I'm no noob to builds/rebuilds but I cannot figure this out.

mess around with the jumpers some more. See if the dvd drive even needs a jumper. On my last system I had a hdd and dvd burner set to master and slave with the jumpers, and Windows would load slow, so I removed the jumper on the dvd drive, and Windows loaded faster than ever.

So try removing the jumper on your dvd drive, and see if that works. Otherwise use another ide cable and make your dvd drive a master on secondary with jumper and without.

Good luck

I'll give it a go. It may just be simpler to leave a disc in the drive. Just seems strange that something that simple would work.

Sounds like the firmware of that drive is causing some issues with Windows XP. Check the Event Viewer log for any signs of malfunction/misconfiguration. Try deleting the device, and the bus its connected to in the Device Manager (it will reinstall automatically next time you reboot). Verify that the device self-installs using DMA, not PIO mode in the Device Manager.

If all else fails you can search for a firmware update for that DVD-ROM drive; paste the drive's model number into Google to see if others might have had similar problems with it; or simply replace the drive.

Post your results back to this thread.:D

Still a no-go. DMA self-installs without issue.

I checked google. There are issues with this drive, but none reported like what I am experiencing...

Worst part is the drive was fine in the older machine. Just upgraded mobo/cpu and hard drive with a clean install of XP home.

It seems like the drive is looking for something, like some software did not install correctly, but I have everthing working once the machine boots. During the boot process, at the Windows startup screen, if I press the eject button and then close the drive again, boot process continues with no further holdup. I can put ANY type of CD in the damn thing and it boots without issue. Weird.

If I can't get it figured out I'll just leave a disc in their until I get the drive replaced.
