Here's a free bump for you.

My first guess would be spyware etc. So run some antivirus proggies. Might wanna defrag too after removing those progies.

Forgot to mention...

Not familair with Sony, but if they gave you a restore disk you could back up your data and do the restore. Should be running like new.

EDIT: Go HERE and check out AT member Schadenfroh's guide to malware, spyware etc. Instructions on how to get rid of and prevent (best free AV proggies etc) problems.

you may also want to run msconfig and go to the startup tab and start turning off unnecessary startup crap...most are not need.

Don't you have a LAN card in your system that has no IP set and depends on DHCP auto IP assign which is not available? Because unassigned/unset LAN cards can slow down the boot process tremendously. Haven't you enabled an - otherwise - unused onboard LAN card in BIOS? (A CMOS reset or "Load Optimal Default" could have put it active. Of course your problem may have nothing to do with a LAN card. Just an idea.

just go to msconfig...get rid fo the programs that you don't want booting at startup (but keep the virus, firewall, or anything important alone)
