Morning All....

I have a win 2k3 server set up as a DC, 3 pc's in all 2 xp. ip addresses all static, i have a folder shared on the 2k3 box and am able to access it from 1 pc with no problems, the other pc access time to the folder is very, very slow. the 2 pc' are not members of the domain yet. This is just a shared folder. my DNS on the server is itself, and the DNS on the other pc's is the server as well. the gateway an all 3 is the router(linksys). am i missing something???

try putting sp1 for win2k3

We had a prob with file sharing from win2k3, it used to hang after about a month, but after upgrading to sp1 if works perfect.

Whats confusing is that access to one machine is fine. It seems the issue is isolated to my other pc. But, i will try the SP1 RC2????

Show is the ipconfig /all output for all three machines. From the non-domain member PC, you should be prompted for a un / pass box, after that, you should connect fine with no "slowness".

Please explain again what you mean.... Also, i went into the event viewer and saw this message after i tried to access the shared folder "The redirector failed to determine the connection type."

Thanks

Are the network card drivers on the slow pc the drivers that come with windows xp, if so update them. Realtek 8139 chips are the real offender here and sis 900 based chips.
The drivers from windows update are better than the base install compatability drivers that winodws installs. I have seen this many times and it is usually the culprit. Furthermore, did you add them to the domain?

Best way to "grab" ipconfig data is to redirect the output to a txt file....

NT/2K/XP/2K3 Systems
Start --> Run --> cmd --> ipconfig /all > c:\ipconfig.txt
this will dump the output to a txt file in the root of the c drive called ipconfig.txt

Just incase you are not are aware of this :D

Take the gateway out as a DNS server on everything (server, clients). That will cause problems.

And run ipconfig /flushdns after you do so.

The gateway should go in the forwarders tab on the DNS server. It may not help your slow browsing issue, but it will prevent plenty of other problems.

Ah, the clients aren't domain members...so it doesn't really matter. Are there any errors in the event log on the slow machine?

The best way to troubleshoot this would probably be with a network trace, but you need to know what you're looking at.

This is the only error\warning in the event viewer "The redirector failed to determine the connection type."

Do you have another NIC that you can put in that machine temporarily? It would be good to rule out this guy: Marvell Yukon 88E8001/8003/8010 PCI Gigabit Ethernet Controller.
