Slow 3D in Windows XP?

Just a question for those who may have more experience with XP than I... I've just installed Windows XP on my system (Celeron 550, 256m ram, Radeon 32mb ddr) and my games are running MUCH slower than before with ME. Just something simple like Baldur's Gate II is nearly unplayable now that I've upgraded. However, 3D things like windows screensavers and such run much faster than before, but have a too colorful, cartoony look to them that makes me think it is cheating somehow to get higher framerates. Anyway, just wondering if anyone else had this same problem with XP, and if there is some obvious fix that I'm just overlooking.

Thanks

It might just be your CPU holding you back...if I'm not mistaken, XP has some pretty hefty requirements, and tends to take advantage the of extra horsepower that today's higher speed PC's have...this might be counter productive on some lower end PC's though....

Go to 3drage or maxreboot and try to get the latest XP video drivers for your system. Also, make sure you have the latest AGP drivers for your board installed, etc. The difference might also have something to do with your openGL and direct3d settings. Probably, your screensaver is running in openGL, and perhaps your other games are setup to run in direct3d... At any rate, chances are that new drivers will fix your problems.

A problem with OpenGL and 2k or XP was that the refresh rate under OpenGL was locked at 60hz.

You need to download Humus' UniTuner and use that to set the correct refresh rate for the resolution you run your games at.
