Slot vs. Tray Loading DVD-ROM drive

Which is better? Will the slot loading DVD ROM drive break sooner than a traditional tray loading one? Are there any other issues? What do you think?
 
I like the slot. I think it looks better. My Pioneer has some hair around the hole ( :Q ).......what were we talking about? Oh yeah, to keep dust out. I don't think reliability is an issue at all. It's the same as folks had in their cars before they made 1000000000 disk CD changers. I've never had a problem with the DVD drive in my pc or the cd players in my cars.

Edit: Besides, the slots are easier to use. No tray to eject and close. You just stick it in and pull it out ( :Q ).....what were we talking about? Nevermind.
 
internal transports are slightly less reliable than a tray drive. at least its not a cartridge drive... i had an NEC 2x that was cartridge. $400 for that. i remember when 4x came out back when i was a freshman in high school... we all thought they were the bomb.
 
i like tray cuz i dont like the way slot looks.. and i dont want dust getting in there..

?? its much more sealed then you'd think, theres the flexible flaps and maybe a swinging plastic flap inside. if you stick a disc in and try to pike anywhere along the slot theres something blocking, not the disc either.

slot is nice cuz once you get used to it tray seems to primitive🙂



I love slot, but you shouldn't use the 106s w/ win2k, it really fux0rz. But, winxp is like a charm


i think i have that drive, win2k runs fine, other comp has the slightyl older one and it runs fine in win2k too😛
 
The slot is better when you have a second optical drive underneath it, those who have the slot drives know what I'm talking about. Otherwise I don't see that it makes a difference one way or the other unless you need to use those mini-cds in it, but I can use my cd-rw for that. The slot drives look cooler though. 😉

Slot drives do look cool, but they are usually louder drives.
I have heard that some media had a hard time with a slot drive too.

I have 3 optical drives in my computer and they are all tray and I don't have any problem with changing discs. When they're not exchanging discs they're closed, and I can only put one cd in at a time 😛

Where'd you get that? I'd have to highly disagree with that statement. Which media have a hard time with the slot drive? I've used just about every major and budget manufacturer you can get and have yet to see one that wouldn't feed.
 
IVe heard that the moving parts a little more prone to breaking in the slot drives.

I've owned tons of conventional tray loaders, and yes- a few cartridge drives 😉
All work fine.
 
I have never had a slotted drive, but i see one SERIOUS advantage to them.

I keep my tower on the floor under my table... and have already felt the pain of removing a CD and spinning my chair to reach a fresh CDR off a spindle, ripped the drawer completely off a TDK drive with my knee.

I just sat there looking at it on the floor unable to comprehend that i had actually done it.

There's a move that 'Go Back' can't save ya from ! 🙂
 
I had a tray drive until my 4 yr old daughter tore the cd tray right off the rails. Got a Pioneer 104S and it's worked like a charm since.
 
i like trays. but slot seems like the new thing to get. they look nice and you can just stick the cd in there if there's nothing in there.
 
Something to think about is that the slot loader cd/dvd roms are more prone to scratching the disc as it is taken in by the drive. I would stay away from them personally. They are cool though. 😉

Lately I have been using a Panasonic 50X tray-load CD-R on my second pc ...........
Twice the drive has ejected a disk while it was still spinning (not completely stopped) and caused severe scratchin of the disk (Win OS original disk) the last time this happened. ............... plus the tray is not very dependable, it will close by itself as I am trying to load or unload the cd ..........!

None of this has happened with any of the three Pioneer 105S, 106S slot-loads that I normally use, they are much more positive and easier to work with, and more gentle on the cd (disk) than any of the tray-loaders I have used ............. !

I have a CD-ROM tray-loader for sale (cheap) if anyone wants it?
 
I've used both Pionner 16X DVD-ROM slot load and tray load (using the slot load right now).
Every single CD and DVD worked perfectly on both of them, but I have to say that the slot load is a bit faster (in access time) and makes less noise (the stabilization table in it seems to be higher quality).

Last, you have to know that there is a digital sound outpout behind the slot load DVD that can be connected directly to the sound card, but there isn't with the tray load. Overall, the slot load seems to be higher quality, but in the long run, I don't know if it will break (had it for 6 months).

hm no, i think they grasp the edges or something, anyways, how many car cd players have scratched your discs😛
 
I would assume a slot load is louder than a tray load since the tray overlaps the panel while my Pioneer 106S has an open slot with 2 thin black flaps.

I think slot is cooler than a tray. But the ultimate cool is a ram tray load floppy drive like they have in the matrix. 🙂 Or even cooler, a 400 disc CD/DVD changer for PC, and program to choose a disc and access it in a few seconds.
