Slot A TBird 800 vs. PIII 800

Ok people I'm ona limited budget here and wanting to know which CPU performs better. I know that the PIII boards sometimes have better features than a KX133 but I'm mostly worried about performance. So, if you could please tell me which you would prefer.

If it's a 100MHz FSB PIII, then I'd prefer the T-Bird unquestionably.

If it's a 133MHz FSB PIII then it really depends on what your doing with the system, in many cases I'd recommend the T-Bird but the PIII has it's merits.
Without knowing your usage characteristics I hesitate to recommend either for certain...

I think the athlon has a slight edge. if i remember right it goes:

Katmai (oldest PIII) < K7 (original athlon) < Coppermine PIII (version your 800 is) < K7-5 (thunderbird athlon)

it should be rather close though, athlon has a slightly better FPU, PIII has a 33% faster FSB (usually, but then again, yours might be 100FSB)

Very close in the end. The Athlon is going to be a hell of a lot cheaper though.

edit: bah! rand beat me 😀

Thank you guys very much. I am going to use this for mid-range 3D gaming and some word processing so that's about it. I appreciate the replies and like most other AnandTech forum members you have answered my question very well.

If you don't have a motherboard already why not go with a Morgan 1GHz? About $42 shipped on pricewatch and should run a nice cool 1200MHz.

<< outpost has the 1ghz duron and k7s5a combo for $90 🙂 >>

That's a great combo! got one myself, and got my 1ghz running at 1.2ghz 🙂 If you can spend the $90 for the two, get it!!

To tell the truth, out of these two I'd go with the PIII. Slot A Athlon doesn't have its L2 Cache on die, thus lowering performance. But, like some others suggested, I don't see any reason for you to get either of two. I suggest you get a Duron (very cheap) and an ECS K7S5A. Nothing can beat the price, speed an upgradability of this combo!

the normal slot A Athlons have the cache off die, but he's talking about a Tbird, which im 99% sure has on-die cache.
