Going to upgrade my processor soon(pIII600-700). Have an Abit BF6 mobo. Using a slot 1 pII350@413 right now. Not sure if I should get a Slot 1 or FC. Also, what does SECC2 mean? Thx for your help.

SECC2 is a way tht Slot1 cpus are packaged. The earlier P2's completely encased the CPU and the CPU mated to a heatplate, then the heatsink mated to the heatplate. Slot 1 athlons still use this configuration. SECC2,which is a better design, cpus have the cpu side open, and the heatsink directly contacts the cpu.

don't you have to break off the plastic case in order for the heatsink to directly sit on the chip?

I wanna get a P3 also, but dunno if I should hold out for price cut$.

Getting back to your question - I'd recommend the FC-PGA format over the Slot 1/SECC2 format, because it is more versatile. All you need to make it work in your Slot 1 board is a 'slocket' (socket 370 to slot 1) adapter for FC-PGA, which are readily available. Intel is switching over to FC-PGA, so why go backwards. Besides a lot of newer mobos are Socket 370 now and won't take an SECC2 no way, of course.

Get a cB0 FC-PGA P3, a slocket, a good HSF and some primo PC133 CAS2 SDRAM and you would be set.

You may want or need to upgrade your board's BIOS for the P3 CPU. The newer BF6's have SoftMenu III and the latest BIOS is dated 7/3/00 !!

Thanks for your help. Haven't updated my bios yet. Someone on one of the forums told me not to upgrade the bios unless I had to. But I may need to now. The instructions on the Abit site are kind of confusing. Guess I'll have to wing-it.
