I have a friend that has verry slow internet speed. I tried to fix it today, but I didn't have any luck. He has a 56k modem, it connects fine, but it loads all of the pages extremely slow (or doesn't load them at all and says "Server could not be found."). I tried loading google.com, it worked. Five minutes later I tried it again, and it didn't want to load it at all.

I tried different ISP's in the neighborhood to connect to, reinstalling dial-up adapter, and checking the connection settings and still nothing. It will frequently disconnect after maybe every 5 minutes too. It's very annoying.

Any ideas as to what could be wrong?

Thanks

Andrew

I'm not sure exactly what he has all in his system, but here are some of what he has:

Windows 98
HPFS 56K Modem (something like that is listed in the system devices)
AMD Duron 900Mhz
Some motherboard with a SiS chipset
SiS Network Adapter (not in use)
AOC Monitor
20GB Hard Drive
250MB ZIP Drive
Floppy Drive
CD-ROM Drive - No idea what brand name it is.

I'm not sure about the graphics card or sound card. I don't know if this really matters, hopefully you can work with the small amount of info I know.

Yes, I tried a completely different number. He is currently using a local service in town - Frontiernet (http://www.frontiernet.net) and I tried connecting with another service in town - DTG (http://dtgnet.com). I've been on both services and it's never been that slow, so I'm sure it's not the service.

Thanks.

If its the HSP 56 Micromodem that you have, it has some issues. You might consider a nice cheap Modem Blaster.

Call someone and just listen for 60 hz hum on the line. Also for other conversations going on in the background of your now quiet conversation. The local operator can usually tell you where to call to have the line tested remotely. Try to sub in a "known good" modem. Some modems will work with improper drivers but not optimally. You may need to track down the specific modem manufacturer using the FCC number on the card. Try www.56k.com for more help. Limiting the top end connect speed with an init string may help with the disconnects. I feel for you man. Good luck.

I reinstalled the drivers and it still didn't work, so I just decided to format the whole hard drive. It's been having more problems than just that, and when I got everything back and running again, the modem worked just fine.. I don't know what was wrong, obviously something with Windows though.

Thanks guys...
