SLK 800 vs. Generic

sold my SLK800 (Vapochill will be here any day) only hsf i had was the stock hsf that came with my xp2400+....well.....i can tell no difference in performance...i have been running game after game all day long and all is well, and im still clocked at 2.4Ghz....
 
the hsf that came with my 2400xp is a piece of crap! my alpha and swifty are so much better. from what I hear, slk800 is as good if not better than what I got.

edit: would you mind telling me what your vcore is?

Your heatsink isn't going to change the performance of your processor. Do you mean your temperatures haven't changed? I highly doubt that especially if you somehow managed to overclock you 2400+ up to 2.4 GHz which is extremely high for a air cooled 2400+. Hell I can't get my 2400+ above 2.25 GHz with the SLK-800! I'm sitting pretty at 2.2 GHz and that's as far as I'm going. Your temperatures probably jumped at least 5-10C.

yeah if you are sayig temperatures havent changed... you really fubared that slk800 install haha 😛

performance, you will notice NO difference....a better heatsink doesnt make your computer faster (reminds me of "adding stickers doesnt give you more hp" for cars haha)
 
I have a question, maybe a dumb one I dunno..:

Those of you who OC like hell and reach extreme speeds using non-air cooling, do you have to turn on the cooler before turning on the computer? I mean, at a certain point your CPU won't OC any more, but if you cool it down BEFORE you turn it on, does that help?

The problem is, I don't really understand just how the extreme cooling helps... not unless it's because you cool down the CPU before you rutn it on..... 😕

Example: you've probably heard about some guy who has overclocked a P4 extremely - it runs at -40 degrees celcious or so. but this is the part I don't understand.... when he turns on hes computer (after longer break) the cpu is at room temp. (perhaps 22 degrees celcious).... how does the OC work then....? Does he cool it down before usage?

well for watercooling usually the pump is turned on before the computer...or sometimes a 2 or so second relay is set in place (computer turns on...2 seconds later pump starts)

for phase change and whatnot, i belive u just turn on the coputer and everything else turns on at the same time
phase change can reach around -20 to -30C idle and somewhere around 0C for full load...and tat is constant (the temperature wont contineu to rise)

for liquid nitrogen, its definitly not a long term option..
usually they put the LN2 on the cpu (in the cup thing they have) and then start up, do what they gotta do and shutdown before the LN2 evaporates completely

the theory is, the colder a semiconductor gets, its efficiency increases....that explains the higher overclocks attainable
 
Hmmm... You don't actually think having a better heatsink will make your computer faster? A person with your knowledge should know that. ^_^; hehe

I just got one myself... SLK-800 dropped about 5C CPU temp over my Alpha PAL8045 heatsink. Really nice if you ask me. =)

 
are there any shootouts between alpha, swiftech, and slk800 on the net?

to the people whose temps dropped:
what were your temps before and after the slk install, and what fan?

from that it looks like the top dogs are:
alpha pal8045
swiftech mcx462
thermalright slk-800

any one of these would probably perform about the same wtih a 80mm 80cfm+ fan strapped on i would think, looks like ill look for whichever one is available and cheap when/if i ever upgrade lol
 
Read HardOCP review. SLK-800 beats Alpha and Swiftech. Put the cost and installation in the equation and it is clear what is the best buy now, SLK-800.
 
Right now I have a CoolerMaster HHC-001, which is a completely solid copper heatsink with heatpipes, and the fan is a screaming little bitch! Im not sure what size, but its a small one, so i guess thats why so loud. The Digidoc software for my Chaintech Nforce2 shows it usually around 7337rpm...


With my 1800+ Palomino at 140MHZ the temp was usually reported around 60c (keep in mind this is read STRAIGHT FROM THE CPU's INTERNAL DIODE), is this decent? I killed this cpu over the weekend somehow, and my Tbred 1800+ is on the way. Will my HHC-001 hold out with the Tbred? Theoretically, if the Tbred runs cooler anyway, that should give me a little more headroom for the HSF to do its job and do it well.


If i switched to the SLK-800 with *not sure what fan*, will it make any tremendous difference in my overclocking success?



Also, if I ever did get that SLK-800, is there a good, CHEAP, LED fan that would suit nicely for a good OC? Ive seen quite a few on Newegg that look like they could get the job done, but a few people said no...

thats a bit hot, i had an xp1800+ at 1.8ghz with a swiftech mcx462+delta 68cfm and its idle was around 40C and max load 44C or so
that was also from the ondie sensor of the xp (asus a7v333 was the board)

any fan with slk800 would do i would imagine
an 80mm that pushes over 40cfm wouldnt be too loud either (the bigger the fans get, the lower their pitch gets)
