Slipstream question: Slipstream SP2 onto original XP CD or onto previously slipstreamed SP1 CD?

On the root directory of my SP1-->SP2 cd, there is an extra help file for SP1 called SPNOTES.htm and an extra file called win51ip.SP1. (My SP1 CD was also slipstreamed from my original XP CD).

When I compared the two CD's, the i386 folder of the SP1-->SP2 CD is bigger than the SP0-->SP2 CD.

I'm thinking that since SP's are cumulative, it should be cleaner to use the SP0-->SP2 CD, but on the other hand, I'm not sure if the extra files on the SP1-->SP2 CD may be of some importance.

So, which CD to use? 😕

Thanks very much! I also browsed through Neowin and they also feel that SP0-->SP2 would probably be better. One thing though: Autostreamer crashes when you try to slipstream an SP0 disk with the 266.01MB SP2 file from today. Other Neowin members state the same. But hey, there's tons of guides on slipstreaming on the web 🙂

yup i plan to start fresh and reslipstream sp0-sp2
i have the xp security rollup cd are there things on it that would be a good addition?

Hmmm... I've only got my already slipstreamed SP1 disc with me...

There shouldn't be any problems going from a SP1 to SP2 slipstream would there?

Yep works fine AutoStreamer, remember once it has made your XP + SP2 ISO image, you need to use Nero Express for example and go to and select the option "DISK IMAGE" and then point it to your XP +SP2 ISO file make sure you`ve "image files" selected in the files option part then just burn,it`ll be bootable,I`ve tried it out & works fine, the one I posted yesterday was wrong.

Having some trouble integrating here.

WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU.exe from MS.
Checksum matches (59a98f181fe383907e520a391d75b5a7).
Can extract with -x switch or winrar okay.

Update.exe fails to run correctly whether directly from extracted files
d:\i386\update\update.exe -s😀:\xp

or passed to via SP2 exe
WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU.exe /s😀:\xp

where folder d:\xp contains the contents of the original OS disc.

A log file spslpsrm.log is created in system root reading that the service pack started.

I made sure that regwizc.dll is registered.

What up wid dat?

I need to know one thing about which I m confused with, if I make a Slipstream Windows XP Pro with SP2, CD, then each time I install windows after formatting my c drive , winodws will automatically install SP2 & after that Windows Installation my Windows will be up to SP2 levelwith all the new integrated components like DX 9c & WMP9 etc, it will not install WMP8.

Now, I m confused that can this provide a problem in the future when installing any update like IE Cumulative patches, because I have installed a Slipstreamed Windows installation not the regular way of installaing XP first then SP2

I want to slipstream because I think if I do that then the folder of about 400 MB names servicepackfiles in my C:\Windows folder will not be made as it is made when SP2 in installed seperately but rite now I have done Windows Installation with SP2 integrated, is it true will slipstreaming not make this folder in c:\windows

After slipstreamed install of WIndows XP I will use nlite to remove further components, I don't like to make a XP CD with the components already removed, I like going manual, will this be OK

Plz need help, can't decide what to do, slipstream & save 400 MB space for that servicepackfiles foler or go regular way & spend 400 MB for servicepackfiles, also Windows XP sp2 dose not given an option not to backup the files to remove sp2 in the future so I use the update.exe/n switch

In my searching I came across a blurb that SP2 update.exe may only function under XP and not 2000. I would call that a serious defect or severe oversight at best if it was intended. It would be interesting to see if it worked under a fresh 2000 install but I can't be arsed so just did it under an XP install I happened to have.

ELopes580, making the CD bootable is part of creating an image and requires an appropriate bootsector file extracted from the original CD. There are gobs of guides which include downloads of such files as well but the easiest way is to use AutoStreamer from neowin.net. It will run the update integration and create a bootable image to be burned.

gxsaurav, go with the integrated SP2. No problem with patches. If space is a problem there are several driver caches that can be purged. See neowin forum.

A li'l trick I did with SP1 was create a folder DOTNETFX under the folder where the original CD is copied to. Then download .NET Framework to this folder, changing the file's name to SETUP.EXE. This enables the option to install .NET Framework from the setup menu Perform Additional Tasks which otherwise does not function.

The queer thing is that there is a new folder and file created with SP2 \cmpnents\netfx\i386\netfx.cab but it is only half the size of the .NET Framework 1.1 download and does not appear linked to the menu. I don't know yet if it installs automatically or if the DOTNETFX\SETUP.EXE thing is still "required" and they just screwed up on the menu (again) or what.

thanks Mem, i was messing around with the iso last night and thought to myself, "Why not just burn it for now.... and see if it works." Sure enough it did 🙂
