Hi all :)

I just read about 'Sneakernetting'. Can someone explain the concept to me? We have a WirelessLAN in our house, but my spare machine is not connected - Is sneakernetting a form of networking?

Thanks.

Edit: Referring to This thread.

Edit # 2 - See latest post - Current problem is - WHICH OS :)

I also have a wired/wireless LAN (Linksys BEFW11S4 Router) in my home. I have found some of the older/slower machines (that in the days before SETI I would have given to GoodWill) are not worth the cost of Adapters and Wireless PC Cards. Since they have modems I just hook them up to the telephone wires once a week or so and upload/download.

I've been considering running a cat5 through the walls and the attic to my "crack room" where the cost would not be so prohibitive...then needing only a hub and some PCI Network Adapters (LNE100TXs). But that would involve a lot of crawling through insulation so I've been keeping that as a "future" upgrade. ;)

I've not done any sneaker netting so I'll let someone who has fill you in on that. :)

Thanks Greg.

Yup - Problem here is that I have no modem (not a big problem) and no Dial up ISP account (large problem :D) as I am on cable here.

And yes the cost of adapter cards and PCMCIA Wireless LAN modules is prohibitive. :)

Smokeball, I have ~20 ISA NICs if you need a couple for some of those older systems. If you run cat5 up there and need some let me know.

Migroo, 'Sneakernetting' is simply transferring files to non connected PC's by using your 'sneakers'.
Can be done via floppy or any other removable media that both sides can read/write on.
So if you have a zip disk drive or CDburner on both sides then you can move new WU to the non connected machines and finished WU from the non connected to the one that is connected for transmittal to seti@home.
Works good if you have a cd burner on both ends, then you can put a large number of WU on the non connected boxes and crack for a long time, then when finished make a major dump over your cable modem.

Excellent - Thats probably what I'll do :)

Argh, I dont even have a floppy on the second machine, let alone a CDR

The only trouble with building your own PCs is that you tend to re-use your floppies etc. I have loads of spare video cards :frown:

Thanks guys, I'll sort it out.

First thing the C400 needs is an OS. I was going to install/experiment with some distro of Linux (as I have no knowledge of it yet) but I got bored... ;)

Whats faster for SETI, Win 98 or Linux?

Thanks for the replies

Well WIn98 blows chunks IF you do anything else with that machine. If you leave it alone then it is usually OK.
Probably easier tho then a build it yourself OS, just my humble opinion.

Yeah thats my thought. I would leave the machine alone as I have this one with which to do things on.

Great thats that sorted then :) Now I just have to install 98 :(

Thanks Wiz :D
