Slightly OP - Optimizing WindowsXP

Hello All,
I've noticed that system performance in WindowsXP is lower than when running Windows 98 SE (I'm dual-booting here) Most notably, when a program is utlizing the CPU (like ECCp, or now SETI), it seems rather sluggish, and even the DC app itself is not going as fast as it should. For example, with SETI, in Win98 I get an average of 3 hours per WU (running an AthlonXP 2000+ @ 2100) but in XP, its usually around 6 hours. (EDIT: oops, that is a lie. I was looking at the stats for my other comp, an Athlon 1GHz. This baby still churns out WUs in 2-3 hours... rest of system still seems sluggish though)
I have not done much optimizing yet, since I have been getting conflicting reports of what to do. I still have all default services running, etc etc. So, if someone can point me to a reliable tweaking guide, or let me know how to improve performance, I'd be much obliged. Thanx
 
Can't remember a good link but here's a start..

Turn off.

Remote Registry
IPSEC
Auto Update (if present)

Loads more can be turned off depending on what you need,

if you're not networked then maybe Workstation and Server could be turned off,

No, don't turn off workstation and server services. You could likely make your system not even boot if you did that. BlackViper's Windows XP Service Guide explains it well.

Sorry about that. It must have happened because I was working on that post as well as editing a post about Folding@Home at the same time. Mozilla's tabbed browsing allows me too much flexibility for my own good sometimes, and I get confused. 😕 😉
