My Dad, in an effort to fix a flakey FDD controller, decided to ditch his first-gen p4 motherboard (it's the only p4 board I've ever seen that can take either SDRAM or DDR RAM) in favor of a IS7-V.

He bought a prebuilt system from a place online and has some crap powersupply (it's "300watts" but there's no 4pin connector for 12v)

We put the IS7-V in, connected ram, cpu, and video card, but got no video or beeps from the system.

I tried the standard tests for that situation (clear cmos, reseat ram, tried different ram (known-good and new sticks), build system outside of the case to check for shorts, etc) and at no time got a beep from the system.

It obviously wasn't going to work, and we're looking at a minimum 5 day wait for parts from Newegg, so we put the old board back in (which is working fine now).

I suspect its his powersupply, we're going to order an enermax for the system. The lack of the 4-pin connector bothers me, but the other board worked fine without one (MB didn't even have the connecter). I'd just like some other opinions so I can feel OK telling him it's just the PS and when the new one comes in he won't have any trouble installing it.

The motherboard needs that ATX12V four-pin plug. Go grab a nice Antec SL350 or something and you should be on your way :) Most mobos that have a receptacle for the ATX12V plug need it to power the CPU power circuitry, and won't run without it.

In his defense, he didn't have any options as far as PS when he bought the system - even if he would have, I'm sure he'd have cheaped out on it ;)

The complete lack of an ATX12V plug on the PS worried me from the get-go, but we forged ahead anyway. My PC is far away at the moment, otherwise we'd have tried that.

I think I'm going to go with that Antec SL350, it's only $6 more than the 300watt Enermax one I was going to suggest and I'd rather have him using a 350 watt one over a 300 watt one.

Thanks for the help guys :)
