Slightly ADD - Careers that are stimulating - Help!

G'day

I haven't been actually diagnosed with ADD, but it seems that I have a lot of the common symptoms according to what I have read online. I am thinking of going to see a Dr and seeing if it is actually ADD, but I'm pretty sure it is.

That's not the point though. What I want to know is what sort of job/career is constantly stimulating, and needs a lot of thought and constant attention to do? I like computers, but I think that most like them here at AT, and that is really my only interest. Any suggestions?

I too have a little ADD...don't we all to some extent? ;)

The best job for people with ADD is definitely OH LOOK there's a butterfly right by my window!

Seriously though, I know most jobs will become slightly routine, but there has to be some that are more exciting/stimulating than others. I just can't think of any...

ADD = just a name/excuse for someone who lacks discipline and self control. Back in the days we called them idiots.

Terrible, terrible idea. Unless the OP wants to managed excel spreadsheets with numbers all day long.

OP needs to go into engineering; requires long, complex processes of thought that are quite interesting to think about. I'm slightly ADD/ADHD but enjoying my job very much.

Lol...right. When I'm reading a book, and someone starts talking at/to me, and for some whatever reason I cannot keep the sentence going in my head from the book and comprehend it, but instead lose my place and am unable to pay attention to the book anymore but to the person talking, that is somehow a lack of discipline and self control? If I were an idiot I wouldn't have gone to one of the top engineering universities in the world. Owned.

I'm a Systems Admin and have 3 main jobs:

1. Fix small user problems as they're reported
2. Maintain Current Systems
3. Plan and Migrate Current Systems to new ones

So basically, you mix this with Caffine and meetings and the fact that we're short-staffed, you can't concentrate on anything for more than 30 minutes before you're interrupted with something. It might be up your alley if you can concentrate enough when hardware fails and you have to remember how you installed a particular OS or application 3 years before.

You couldn't just say "hey, I'm busy, talk to you later" and carry on with the book..but instead you continue paying attention this person and suddenly this is a realized symptom of ADD.
You're simply not focusing on what you should be doing. Perhaps "idiot" isn't the right thing to say. I've also went to one of the top aero sci schools in the world but that doesn't help me if I my mind is wandering all over the place.

I too was diagnosed with ADD years ago but after several different opinions from a few doctors, I've come to realize and accept that it is what it is: simply a matter of self control and discipline. It cannot be corrected by drugs. The only way to correct it is to correct yourself and that comes from a change in lifestyle and the way of thought process and sticking to it.

You have to find what you enjoy, otherwise it'll all become boring. If you think you enjoy working on computers, go apply to Geek Squad or something, and give it a try, see if that's really what you enjoy.

Everyone has that problem. You're not stupid, you just need to work harder to overcome the fault.

very real and measurable [lower] levels of certain neurotransmitters is completely BS? And medicine that actually rights those lower levels, is again... BS?
ADD does require practicing self control, I have this problem myself, but that self control is a hell of a lot harder than someone who doesn't have those deficiencies in neurotransmitters. that's where medicine comes in. No doctor should ever say "oh yeah this medicine is the cure to your ADD", because that's never what was intended. The medicine, coupled with counseling, is what helps someone easily overcome, and then the medicine simply is there to keep the levels proper so the person can function like a normal person. The medicine, at first, is simply there to bring the person up to regular levels, so the counseling can sink in a lot easier and the patient can right themselves more effectively.

i'm learning how to cope with my problem by attempting to self-coach and using ephedrine to attempt to bring the chemical balance to standards so I can make the coaching easier. That is why a lot of people only need to be on the medication for so long, because they get adapted and eventually simply reprogram their mind to behave properly... not sure if the chemical levels ever change though... could simply be the person has a stronger capability to practice self control, that has been ingrained over a period of years.

Dude, you cant claim you owned someone yourself. Someone quotes what you type and responds with "owned". Thats how it works. Thats how you own someone. The fact that you said owned in your post makes whatever you typed, even if its the best insult/comeback known in the history of mankind, null and void. You lose. Good day, sir!

oh damn, I never knew I had ADD. I can't read while listening to somebody talking either. I thought it was natural for human beings to get bored and lose concentration when doing mundane technical reading. It's not?!? I never could listen to music while I was studying at a top 10 university without losing some focus. I didn't even have a supply of adderall for cramming :(:(:(:(

For a stimulating career, try summer work in a warehouse, digging ditches, or slinging boxes at a UPS distribution center.
