damn door dings... I wish doors would swing upward (if not for that upside-down safety thing). I've been dinged while I was sitting in the car. I hate people who don't give a shit about other people's property.

You mean like a deloren? I thought that it was almost impossible to open the doors on those things while parked between two cars.

Like Lambo doors ... but again, if it's upside down in an accident and the windows don't work, you're royally fuct. Remember those pictures of the couple burned to death because they couldnt' get out? Nasty.

Sounds overblown. Don't conventional car doors get jammed shut from accidents all the time?

I don't know but both doors are completely inoperable if you're on your roof with those doors. What are the chances both doors on a standard car accident are busted shut?

BTW, did you ever see those pictures? You can just tell the story of the last minute of their lives...

Freak accidents can happen with any car. More people have burned in cars with jammed conventional doors than gullwing or lambo doors combined just based on production volume alone. People have been pinned on motorcycles and burn as well.

How about no doors at all? That would be safer on that off 0.0000001% chance someone gets stuck in their car and can't get out in a fire. Lets make it a law right now!

Accidents happen, life happens, etc. It just does, there isn't a cause to point fingers at specific things and find blame. Get out of the plastic bubble and ride in a car with gullwing doors and take a chance!

Hold on. Let's think about this since this thread is all about creating different types of doors for new cars. Let's say: 50% vehicles are made with Lambo doors and 50% vehicles are made with conventional doors. It sounds like you're telling me "life happens" and that it wouldn't matter which doors they had... the chances of a door not being able to open in either car in a handful of accidents is the same.

This is not a life-happens problem. Those doors are just a bad idea safety/percentage-wise.

Point I was making is that simply driving at all is a bad idea safety/percentage-wise. As is propelling our squishy bodies through the air at 300 mph 30,000 feet off the ground for 2000 miles. But we still do it.

Just think it's ridiculous to single out something as mundane as a certain type of car door and fear it will bring an end to all humanity, because in a galaxy far away, one or two people got trapped and died. How about convertibles? Regular style doors, but you don't have to worry about not getting stuck in a fire, because you're head is now a 100 foot skid mark on the pavement. How about small cars, big cars, metal cars, plastic cars, slow cast, fast cars, etc. that all have their style vs. convenience vs. safety vs. practicality all at odds with each other?

I personally don't care for gull wing or lambo doors, but if I was into that I'd go all out with it, considering the chance of the doors being directly responsible for my death are a fraction of a fraction of my chances of getting into a lethal accident in the first place. Good thing I carry a firearm with me at all times for that 0.000001% when I find myself about to burn to death ;)

Sorry for the rant, don't take it personal, I just get tired of all the ninny nanny safety this, safety that, must protect every cellular organism from themselves crusade at the expense of free will and fun in life. George Carlin says it best in his skit about germs and batting helmets.

I didn't look at the pictures, no. I assumed they were pictures of some charred corpses which I don't really need to see. :p

There's no statistics of course, and since gull doors aren't very common I suspect any statistics that could be dragged up would be pretty suspect unless you could some how account for the type of car and general safety, etc. But my gut tells me that there probably really isn't a hell of a lot of difference in safety. I'd be more concerned about the gull doors maybe not lending themselves well to having certain new safety features installed in the car...like side airbags or strengthened side beams or something.
