Wow, I'll be part of that 0.71% in a few days.
Just shows how niché the ultra-high end market really is.

Indeed.
Looks like Nvidia is doing better in sales then ATI if those results are anything to go by.

Its a cheap, fast, and hot card that has SM 3 on it. Good for HL2 and the Source games...

The 6600 being #1 is a very recent development. Last summer it was pretty much all R9600. The 9600, X600, mobility 9600/9700/9800 were nearly 60,000 of the total (at the time) 260k. Looks like 30,000 new users since then, and a lot upgraded from 9600s to 6600gts over the holidays.

The more interesting part is the 37,500 pcie boxes vs. 90,000 agp boxes. This was 85% AGP before the holidays, down to 70% now. Looks like the lack of AGP video card choices is forcing people to sidegrade kicking and screaming.

858 X1600 users as well. Not a good sign, considering the card's been out for over a quarter, equivalent to the hotly selling 6600GT and even available in AGP.

Geforce 7800 series = 12113

ATi X1800 = 872

This sort of tells you something about why the newly released 7900 series is already showing signs of being out of stock.

Guess the 6600GT is still king of mid range cards. (Many mustve jumped from 9600 series as the above poster mentioned)

Those lists always make me realise how crappy my computer reall is. Seeing that even the people who know nothing about computers have way better than I got. And i'm sure the people here have much higher than the average STEAM user. Anyways, my 32meg Mobility Radeon 9000 runs HL2 , CS:S, and DOD:S at 1024x768 at 60 FPS, so I really don't get why anyone needs these uber cards to begin with, let alone SLI and Crossfire.

Still that's 0.71% of the total market.

Not to be too pedantic, but it's .71% of the systems that took the Steam Hardware Survey since 3/1/2006, not ".71% of the total market".

I would think it would be a safe assumption to assume the ones hardcore enough to have two video cards in their system, would've played HL2 at least once.

My point was that the number of SLI/Crossfire systems is probably WAY less than ".71% of the total market", since there are undoubtedly many systems out there that have not taken the survey. Although 30 as the worldwide total of Crossfire systems seems a little low.

I'm not too surprised about the SLI/Crossfire ratio being tilted so far in NVIDIA's favor. It would be interesting to see that broken down by card type (ie, 6600s, 6600GTs, 6800s, 6800GTs, X800s, X1600s, etc.) rather than just "NVIDIA" and "ATI".

The 7800 series was out well before the X1800 series was, and was a pretty big upgrade over the 68xx cards. Obviously its going to have a lot more cards sold. Same goes for SLI, its been out a lot longer (about a year) than Crossfire. Again, obviously its going to have more users.

One thing the steam survey does convey, is that they should be selling games on DVD only, no more of this 4-cd crap, and charging $10 more for the DVD. When its cheaper to make in the first place.

ATI have a mountain to climb to reach equal market share for MultiGPU setups it seems.

The really interesting thing in that is this for AMD CPU's: 3.7 GHz and above 36 0.01 %

How in hell has 36 people got AMD CPU's to 3.7GHz+ and play games at that setting?

Well, the X1800 series been out for 4~5 months. But the difference is WAY too big. I guess its the 7800GT thats given NV the edge in the high end market.

The reason is NOT 7800GTX vs X1800XT- it's the success of the 7800GT vs. the failure of the X1800XL. Until the 7900 series released, the 7800 was the king of price vs. performance, and the X1800XL was higher priced and often had lesser performance, AND was out alot less longer.

Right now it's SLI 2265 vs Crossfire 32.

I'm amazed at how well NVIDIA does in this survey after ATI cards came with free copies of HL2.

Also, on-board audio FTW!

They came free with 9600 series. You are forgetting the fact that last year about 60,000 used 9600 pro/Xt etc. Its just that most of them got a 6600GT.

I would guess that of the total market, we're talking no more than 0.2% that have SLI/Crossfire. Absolutely miniscule any way you look at it. Clearly, Anandtech members are not at all representative of the general market. And yet, so much development/manufacturing/advertising money put into the SLI/Crossfire market.

They are.
The Valve survey has become a VERY good way of extrapolating results of the larger market as its shown great correlation over time.

Yup, exactly right. 6600GT is also a price/performance darling, and ATI has its work cut out for itself, as it hasn't had a true value winner since the 9600 Pro.

so SLI is in front because its been out longer? maybe

but id also wager that its flatout the best mulit gpu platform currently available.

I'd say the 9500 Pro was the price/performance darling. I think the reason ATI has so few Crossfire systems is that Crossfire only caters to the ultra high end. SLI can be done from the midrange on up with nVidia. Also, Crossfire cards cost more than the equivalent non-Crossfire boards. Finally, ever tried to go out to a retail store and find a Crossfire Edition card? They're almost non-existent.
