My Leadtek 6800NUs showed awesome OCing potential, they came up with over 400core and over 800 memory on Coolbits "optimal" test. The highest I ever ran them was 350/700 though, and even that just to benchmark.

(in SLI their performance was teh roxor without OCing)

how is overclocking or unlocking pipes done in a sli config? does coolbits let you configure each card individually? what about flashing your video card bios? my coolbits optimal test gave me a core of 450 and a memory of 845, something like that. that's pretty insane. the GoForce 6800 Ultra is powered off of a derivative of the nv41 (the nv42, which uses a 0.11 process), and overclocks even better. i hope nvidia will come out with a card based on the nv42. the mobile 6800U even beats the deskop 6800U in some cases.

Non SLI with good card definately.....sli isn't worth its price...

With 6800GTs and Ultras, it offers more performance "bang for buck" than any other upgrade.

To me, that makes it "worth the price".

Ok...so you're saying that spending $220 for the DFI SLI and $480/6800 ultra PCI-e which totals up to $1180 just for mobo and cards? I'd say that's going a little overboard, unless your computer is your life...

OR you are making medical doctor's salary...

Hardly.

Such a rig might last a person two years, whereas the only people using X800XLs in two years will be making this guy's salary

Would you mind sticking to facts and refrain from trying to stir up flame wars again? I would have thought that after your last two week Moderator sponsored "vacation" that you would keep it toned down a bit.

The OP asked:

Well I can't afford both SLI and a $300 video card.

So he's on a budget and wanted opinions and facts about what would be the best upgrade path for him. Not another "Nvidia SLI is teh roxor" speech.

Look everybody! It's Creig, the mod who.....isn't.

LOL at your attempts to police the board.

My point stands:
I was replying to the OPs assertion that 6800U SLI is only for those with Dr.s salary, and stated that in two years the X800XL will be fast food salary bait.

ok, the x800xl will be worth less in 2 years, but current cards in sli will be worth the same? Sli mb's are expensive here where I shop, so I would go for the one card solution and save your money and interest for 2 years.

And where exactly did you post the proof to your assertion that "the X800XL will be fast food salary bait" two years from now, Miss Cleo?

The fact of the matter is that NOBODY knows what the future of video gaming holds, which features will be valuable and which won't. And certainly NOBODY knows what current cards will be worth two years from now so I don't know why you're bothering except to try and stir up more trouble.

gvayl - Look at the games you currently want to play and which you would like to play in the future. Then look at a few set of benchmarks that use the games/game engines based on those you picked. The Tech Report benchmarked 12 different ATI and Nvidia cards using three of the most popular games currently released (Doom 3, Half-Life 2 and Far Cry) as well as the 3DMark05 benchmark program.

Once you've decided that, then it simply comes down to money and personal preference.

Creig, you don't have to be clairvoyant to know a $300 card today is going to cost about $100 in two years.

The X800 series even more so, they're based on the aged R300 core.

The Burger King guy was a joke, you need to lighten up. No one here is denying the X800XL is a good deal for $300..
