I stopped following graphics cards for awhile now and was wondering if we still need to have identical video cards to sli? By identical, I mean do we need the same brand/model for sli to work?

I have an evga 8800gt currently and am really considering the ECS with the Accelero passive cooler. Thanks!

You can use two different brand cards. Of course it has to be the same gpu, and running at the same speeds. There are a FEW examples of being flaky and unstable with some brands. But I used an EVGA with a MSI and I had no issues at all.
