SLI motherboard with a single graphics card?

Im wondering on getting the new nforce 4 chipset. just wondering whether or not I should go SLI or not. either way im gonna get only one video card

does it hurt the performance of the SLI mobo in any way if theres only 1 video card instead of 2? i know its a dumb question but i have not been following the hardware news for the past 2 months

price of 1 6800 gt is like 2 6600 gts, you might as well buy 1 6800 gt now for the price of 2 and buy another one later on

No, running one Video card will not hurt it at all. Think of PCI-Express as good old fashioned PCI based SLI- they work the same.

Remember that SLI (nVIDIA's version) does not always provide a performance boost, some games only see 10% while others see nothing or a performance loss of 1-3%. It's not the magic performace bullet everyone thinks it is. Not kidding.

You would be better off to save the extra money and put it aside for a DX10 card when they come out in '06 by then a cheap DX10 card will out perform a 6800 SLI set up with better Visiual Quality.

some people are buying nf4 sli but not go for double gfx cards.

reason is it supports sata2 and ncq. its nice to have that upgrade route with storage.

Why do you give such terrible advice to people? If you had half a clue what you're talking about, you'd know that the only settings SLI loses speed at are settings no one with SLI would ever run.

As for you foolish "10%" comment, why don't you just read the site you're on?

The truth
Gee Googer, does going from 51fps with one 6800GT to 95fps seem like a 10% gain to you? It's almost double:roll:

More truth
Going from 37fps to 65fps doesn't seem like a "loss" to me either.

Far Cry too
34>58 What percent of 34 is the 24fps gain Googer?

Etc.

As for saving up for the Dx10 cards of 2006, no fooling? You think cards that come out in 2006 will beat cards from 2004? Revelation there.

I can't even imagine why someone would give out advice this incredibly wrong unless you know the OP and want to screw him uP?

ok, whats the best setup. Im going to get a SLI motherboard i've decided

at the moment im leaning towards one Geforce 6800 GT, maybe a year later i'll get another one if need be

anything wrong with this?

Only if you like having a computer that's as close to "future proof" as it gets. (no, nothing wrong)

The 6800GT is a great card, I loved mine. There aren't games out now it won't play at high res/high details.

If you add another, I expect that could continue for a long while.

Pick a solid NF4 board, and that in combination with a 6800GT should provide excellent performance. As for adding another 6800GT in SLI later, the examples that Rollo provided certainly show real benefits of such a configuration. Presumably, Nvidia should be able to improve the performance gains of SLI, over time, since driver support for SLI is still relatively new and in development. As to whether a dual 6800GT will outperform a DX10 card later, who knows? It'll depent on the game and on the theoretical card, and you won't be able to use that theoretical card between now and when it becomes a reality 😉.

Unless some major defect in Nvidia's SLI is revealed, I think your plan is a solid one, as long as you shop around for good prices.
