SLI mode for video cards

Hello all.

I was just curious if someone could provide a quick bit of insight on SLI for me. All i know is that you can run 2 video cards together for better performance.

And, my second question, do the 2 video cards have to be of the same exact make?
ex. Can you run an ATI x800 PRO in SLI with an ATI x800 XT?

SLI only works for Nvidia cards, only on the pci-e platform and only on a 6600gt, 6800, 6800gt, and 6800u. And they have to be 2 identical cards.
