I would say, try it with the Q6600. If it just doesn't satisfy, sell the Q6600 to your friend and bump up to a Q9450 and OC to ~4GHz.

I'd go for the 45nm Quad over the Q6600 just for the reduced power consumption. Even with water, I'd imagine a pair of GX 280s and a quad are probably somewhat of a challenge to keep cool.

No point in moving to a faster processor if he has a 24" LCD. At 1920x1200 res its basically GPU driven, the proc will make little if any difference at all..

Exactly... I was expecting 4 ghz, but the best motherboard (at the time) the best memory and PSU, the best air cooling, and I can;t get 3.6 stable !

You need an unlocked multi to get 4 ghz IMO.

wow, holy hell what a friken mess.

OP, it doesn't make a tiny bit of a difference what cpu you get for gaming. whether you go with a 3.6 ghz dual or quad, or a 4 ghz dual or quad (unlikely unless you get a QX), it doesn't make any difference.

Unless you care about other things, like media encoding or 3D rendering, cause that's all cpus are good for, and soon not even that (cuda). For gaming at 1920x1200, and im sure you will max out AA and AF filters, cpu matters very little.

If you don't believe a person with a 4 ghz QX9650 and a pair of GTX 280s in SLI that has tried all kinds of combinations like disabled cores down clocked cpu to meticulously examine the impact, then by all means go with all the other biblical advice in this thread.

And by the way, add GRID to the list of games that utilize quads. I have seen my cpu peak to 65% usage during game play. And still, with 2 cores disabled I get exactly the same fps.

Hmm.. maybe I would see the difference if I turn down the resolution and lower my settings to medium. Wouldn't that be humorous after you spend 1500 dollars in graphics.

:p

JAG pwned us all. LOL...

However JAG, quadcore does make a hugh difference on supreme.

And you being a fellow 280GTX owner, what processor do you recomend him?

I am sure it does make a difference so if he plays supreme commander, dual core should not be on his shopping list. Quads also make a big difference in UT3 at any given resolution.

I would recommend an E8400, and an easy overclock of 450x9. Should play well with his 780i and DDR2-1000.

Should new games come out, like Crysis Warhead or Mirror's Edge (hey thats UT3 engine from what I heard, wink wink), he can always sell the E8400 (like hes going to have trouble doing that..), and buy a Q9650 (which will be out by the time these games come), and then he can have the best of both worlds (400x10 = 4 ghz quad core).

As of right now though, he is better off saving money. That's my view of it.
