With two 6800 Ultra's running in the same system, what kind of power supply is an SLI setup going to require? Because you've got to figure a new insane-wattage power supply into the cost of an SLI setup. So its not just the price of the cards. Its the cards plus the power supply. That's more like $1,000 for two Ultras. That's just too much for me.

I imagine since the current ones will run fine on a 350W PSU (I've been doing it since E3), that a solid PSU with good Amps on the 12V rail would be sufficient. Providing each card it's own 12V rail should prove interesting, though 🙂

X-Connect's Ultra would seem to fit the bill pretty good here.

Why would you spring for 2 Ultras instead of GTs for SLI? You didn't take an Ultra over GT for AGP. The same reasons you used to select the GT for your present should be applicable to SLI as well. They will cost less than the Ultra but have very similar potential only with single slot cooling and molex. The PSU issue is easily avoided simply by adding a 2nd inexpensive Sparkle to your present one. Some won't have the room so they are SOL if they refuse to be creative, but anyone here who wants to add a 2nd can easily do so even if that means external mounting or laying loose 😉 Subsequently the cost factor isn't what is being propagated here IMO. Adding a $30 2nd PSU+2 sub $400 PCIe GTs should do the trick quite nicely. Seeing as some around here spring for EEs and FX CPUs that cost as much as this SLI setup would but garner far less of a performance boost over their less expensive stable mates in gaming for the money, I'd say that it is going to find a home in a number of AT members systems 🙂

Regardless, this is a win for Nvidia; to have SLI isn't a bad thing, although it's importance is definately overblown, IMO. Dual 6800GT's would be nice but heck, most people can't even afford one (or have the sense not to drop $800 on soon-to-be-outdated video cards). For people who really want it, though, it's great.

I think a bigger win for nVidia right now is that the 6800GT is the best price/performance card at the moment, while the 6600GT is the best in it's price segment. Having SLI is just the icing on the cake.

You mean ArtX isn't the same company they were when ATi made the Radeon MAXX right? :laugh:

Rollo as u said i would like to see something like the MAXX again.

In my opinion i think DUAL GPU not as in cores, as they are already multicores. Will be the way forward, the costs will be the same, maybe the board might be bigger, but also the power consumption will be less than having 2 boards, and u wouldnt need to have an additional PCI-E slot either.

Again as ive said in many other posts, i believe ATi will come out with something like that, but nV are only bringing out the SLI as a stop gap measure, and they also have something similar up their sleeves also.
