Sleeping at work...

Aikouka

Lifer
Alright... who's done it? How severe was it? A couple minute nap... a bonafide night's rest?

Even with a good 8 hours worth of sleep, I tend to get incredibly tired later in the day. Luckily, a little net browsing usually peps me back up to normal. I think I need to turn of the screen saver on this machine, as looking like I'm staring at my screen thinking doesn't work if the screen saver pops up... and stays up 😉.

I sometimes get the post-lunch blues...and if the office is really warm...then my eyes get really heavy. But I've never fallen asleep at work.

I used to work only a few feet away from my boss. Occasionally, I would irresistibly doze off for a couple seconds, sometimes a minute or two...unfortunately, I would often wake up a bit startled. I finally had to change my sleeping habits when I woke up with a jerk and accidentally threw my mouse at the wall. 😱

Try explaining that one...

blame it on a nervous twitch

One time I woke up when my boss handed me something, and I'm typically the person who'll say, "Ah, thank you" or something to that effect, but I pretty much responded with "OKAY" in quite the loud voice. I just kind of looked around and went back to what I was doing (prior to the sleepage).

i've been known to "shut 'er down" for a few minutes after lunch. now i sit next to the chatty ladies' cubicles and "hen house" area, so it's tough to get some decent shuteye.

working midnights, there was a few times I'd be asleep by 12:30 and wouldn't get up until 7:30. I finally got off them a month ago after working them for the past 2-3 years.

First job was a pinchaser/mechanic at a bowling alley. Worked friday nights until close (3am) and had to be back into work by 9:30am Saturday to cover the 'special kids' leagues and kiddie b-day parties. I would actually sleep on top of the bowling machines. Boss caught me once and said, "Hell son, if you can sleep through that racket go right ahead." Never cared as long as I got the stuck balls and such quickly.

I used to get a good long sleep while working 3rd shift at a small printing company. I was the only guy in the office (prepress tech) and there was a nice couch in the lounge. The press operators would snooze next to their machines also. If anything came up, they knew where to find me 😉 20hrs of class and 40hrs+ work... man those were the days.

Now I occasionally take a 'crap-nap'. Hit the stall and try not to snore for 10-15 minutes.

When I worked at Shopko while going to college I did backstocking. One weekend I was scheduled to work until close (11pm) Friday night and then open the next morning at 5am. It was only me and an assistant manager until 8am. Once I got to work I went to the housewares section and grabbed two pillows then I made a fort of diaper cases and went to sleep. The manager walked within 2 feet of my fort and didn't see me. I got a good 2 hours of sleep. 🙂

If you would've put a "No Gurlz Aloud" sign on the front, I think you would've had a legendary post there 😛.

Also, I believe in PA, it's illegal to be scheduled so close together like that... I can't remember if it only affects certain ages or not or whether there's a similar law in place where you live, but there may be 😛.

One time during the after-hours, i pulled a full on Costanza under the desk. Yes, i got caught. Another time before i thought i should be more incognito i was caught sleeping on a sofa in the public area. This was shortly after i got hired too! Having spent the prior 8 or 9 years in academics i didnt think anyone would give a shite (we are MIT and Harvard afterall). I could not have been more wrong.

fired, layed off, downsized?

I do not make a habit of it but I have done it a few times.

1. I went night skiing during a very busy week at work. The next day I was so tired that I fell asleep at my desk while working on a project. I woke up about 20 minutes later with my keyboard pressed into my face and a bunch of garbage typed on the screen.

2. Got pushed into shift work in our IT department when our ERP implementation did not go well. I'm not a night person. I had a horrible time trying to stay awake during the night shift (7 pm to 7 am). One night I found a nice sofa that I could take naps on. I end up finding a position in a different department. It was the worst job I ever had.

I have half-sized cubicle walls, so everyone can see you. I haven't slept yet, but I've come close to head bobbling during meetings.

Oh god.. I'm notorious for snoozing during meetings 😱. Normally I don't ever have to talk or they may not pertain much toward me, I'm just kind of there. Although, during one meeting where it was right after lunch and I was sitting in the chair in the front... the guy talking had a books-on-tape-esque voice. That was a nice nap.
