Supposedly a true story, New York State denies that there ever was such a place IIRC.
I read the book by Lorenzo Carcaterra. His other book too. I'm still not sure if it's true or not. Good movie though.

It actually wasn't a true story...from what I remember, it was just a big publicity stunt by the writer who refused to comment on it after New York went through their files and found no recollection of the place.

Regardless, it's a great story with a great cast...De Niro, Hoffman, Pitt, Bacon, Crudup and Driver. whew.
