comp specs:

Asus P5N-E SLI mobo w/ up to date bios
Q6600 cpu
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231209 this memory
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136284 this HD

My computer will not go into sleep mode. When I click it, it goes through the process; screen goes blank, HD light on, etc as if it was preparing to go.

around 30 seconds later, I can hear the fans stop spinning for a split second and then it turns back on and brings me to the log in screen.

Not sure what the problem is, but im thinking its a motherboard issue, so thats why I posted in this section

thanks in advance

Check the properties of your network adapter. I had the same issue and found it was being caused by some sort of wake-on-lan setting.

Also, if you check your Windows system log you will probably see messages saying what caused the computer to wake. I'm pretty sure that's how I discovered my network adapter issue.

I had the same problem a while back too. I did the changes M0RPH said for the network adapter. I think I also went into the power settings to change wake on USB settings.

Wireless mice/kb can cause this. Go to USB devices in devmgmt.msc and change power options

A few commands you can use.
open a command prompt by typing cmd in the search box on start menu
right click the icon on the command window and pick properties.
In the layout tab change screen buffer size height to 2000
That will increase the lines that you can scroll back so you can read the output from the command below

At the command prompt type
powercfg /?

This will show power request - powercfg /requests
Last item that caused the pc to wake - powercfg /lastwake

Turn it off in Control Panel, Java Control Panel, Advanced, Miscellaneous

This option is grayed out.

Here are the important parts from the link:

Also, under device manager "Keyboards", if you go to the properties for your keyboard (with the G11, you'll see 2 keyboards), do either one have "Allow this device to bring the computer out of standby" checked under "Power Management"?

"When I clicked though on the settings of both HID drivers, it did turn out that just one of them had a checkbox option for allow to wake up from sleep. I unchecked it, and the bug no longer appears."

Remember that when you use the lastwake command you need to wait till the computer wakes up by itself. If you put it to sleep then press a key to wake it up it will show the keyboard as the wake device.

I seemed to have mis-diagnosed.

When I cam to the conclusion it was the keyboard, i had everything unplugged and started to plug things in one by one.

When I have everything else plugged in and unplug the g11, it wont sleep.

I have the following plugged in:

G11 Keyboard
G5 mouse
External HD
UPS (for communications)
and a non-plugged in micro-usb cable (for my blackberry)

if everything is unplugged, it will sleep.
if the keyboard is in, everything else out, it wont.
if the keyboard is out, everything in, it wont.
I have tried singling out the portable HD and UPS but is still no working.

any ideas besides a hardware problem?

I had this same problem with powercfg telling me the same thing.

I had to disable both the mouse and keyboard from waking the computer from sleep in the device manager. Now it sleeps and hibernates.

Its good thing because I have a 800watt psu and I don't like running it when i'm not using it to save on electricty bill.

Yay!
