I generally try to avoid sitations where I don't get enough sleep. I aim for 8 hours. I can do that easily when I'm on night shift as I don't need to get up early or go to bed early. When I go to bed early it takes me too long to fall asleep as I'm not tired. When I switch from nights to days, often I don't sleep the first night, because I'm too awake. Makes for a rough day, but then I am tired and can fall asleep the next night, then I'm ok.

So generally if I get some lack of sleep I can pretty much recover within the next time I can get my 8 hours. I've never had long strings of <8 hour nights, so could not tell you what effect that would have on me or how long it would take to recover.

If you regularly lack proper time to sleep, its time to reevaluate your life situation, as it's really not good for your body to do that. I had a class mate in college that used to obsess with overstudying (he HAD to get an A, a B was not good enough), but also WoW. He would get like 4-6 hours a sleep per night. Caught up with him, he ended up crashing hard near the end and failed. He should have either played less WoW, or studied less, so he can get his 8 hours.

7 to 8 hours is really needed.
The only thing that helped me through all those sleepless nights and difficult next days at work that i have an OCD alike error detection/correction/verifying personality. As soon as i can not guarantee the integrity of some information that i remember , i start verifying it. Thank god for the local networks and internet. :)
Focusing on the steps even more when doing a task.
Luckily , i can turn it off when not required.

This morning I wasn't yet awake, the coffee hadn't taken an stab at my sleepiness and I read the title as Sheep deprivation ...

Had to wonder about the OP and the barnyard animals.
