Slavery reparations again: This is ridiculous

AndrewR

Lifer
Take a look at this article on MSNBC.com which is from the Washington Post and discuss the reparations movement (about which I posted several months ago after watching a panel discussion on it). Unbelievable. Here's the best part:

HE [Robert L. Brock] CONTENDS that black people are eligible for special tax rebates and, if they pay him $50 to fill out a claim form, they will one day collect a half-million dollars in compensation for all that slavery and state-sanctioned discrimination stole from African Americans.

That's right -- "I'll help you -- now give me your money!" And, if Johnnie Cochran is involved, you KNOW it has to be legitimate.

Sure, the allure of free money is wonderful, but who is going to pay for it? The US federal government isn't responsible nor are the majority of the people in this country. Perhaps the reparationists should pursue the descendants of the slave traders, presumably in the Netherlands, Britain, Spain, France, Italy, the West Indies and Africa. Or, they could levy against assets of the Confederate government -- Confederate war bonds, anyone?

This country absolutely amazes me sometimes.

No levy aginst the Confederacy...

No slaves were ever imported by the Confederacy... how quaint.. only by the US of A.

Weird how no one pursues the tribal leaders in africa as they are the descendants of the people who sold the slaves to the white traders. Slaves were POW basically from tribal conflicts in the old days.

No offense meant, but noone ever blames the africans for the entire slave controversy in USA.

<< ?We?re glad to be in America,? said Gary Grant, a Pentecostal minister who helped arrange Brock?s visit here. ?But the white man has been taking advantage of the black man all our lives. Now, we want to get paid.? >>

If this part isn't shady I don't know what is...
ADVOCATES WARN AGAINST SCAMS
As he has traveled the country, Brock has been promoting a compensation idea that is apparently striking a chord: a $500,000 check from the federal government. The figure is drawn from an unsuccessful lawsuit Brock filed against the U.S. government in 1965.
In the past couple of months alone, several thousand people have come to churches and community centers in places such as Waycross, Ga., and Lake Wales, Fla., to hear Brock?s lectures. Many of them have paid $50 to fill out his claim forms, which other reparations advocates, including Conyers, have condemned as an obvious scam because there is no settlement to claim. Similarly, the IRS in October issued a statement cautioning African Americans against being ?misled? by offers related to reparations. The statement said that the IRS has received ?a growing number? of reparations claims this year, even though there is no such provision in tax law.
Brock is elusive about where he would file his claim forms or precisely what happens to the money he collects. In his talk, he indirectly addresses the charge, telling people that ?slavery was the scam.?

Give me a break. You really mean, "No comment can be intelligently made about such nonsense".

Just because some of the blacks in the US feel like they are the only persecuted race on the planet, past and current, doesn't mean that they are entitled to money. As mentioned above, American Indians suffered at the hands of the settlers here, as did the native peoples of Central and South America. Like I mentioned, the Chinese (and presumably other Asian workers) suffered at various points in this country's history. American blacks do NOT have any exclusivity on discrimination, and if you would actually travel outside of your little world you might understand that there are places just as civilized as the US where racism is far more virulent, open, and commonplace right now (try asking a French North African or perhaps a British Pakistani or a German Vietnamese).

When blacks in this country try to assert that slavery is the worst thing that has ever happened to a race of people, I want to buy them a ticket to the Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C., for a little dose of history that apparently was never taught to them (or never learned). Or, perhaps a visit to the Russian peasantry in the Stalin years might be in order or the massive killings under Mao Tse Tung or even the killing fields of Cambodia.

Do we even need to bring up the point that a great portion of this country's citizens were not even in this country when slavery occurred, let alone the fact that the VAST majority never owned slaves? What about the 3,000 blacks who owned slaves? Are we going to take a portion of the blacks in this country and make them pay instead of receiving money? What about the immigrants to this country in the last 40 years who came AFTER the passage of the Civil Rights Act so who weren't even in this country when racism was backed by the law? Are they a party to this handout? If we are talking about racism then, do we also compensate Irish, Italians, Polish, Mexicans, Koreans, Japanese, Chinese, and various other groups that have endured racism in the past? Why not? Hey, if this is about racism, I need to get some money, too, since I'm sure some of my fellow Poles were discriminated against in the past. Woohoo! Christmas again, courtesy of Uncle Sam! No -- free money is appealing but nonsense.

No, slavery was not a bright spot in this country's history, but it's also finished. The only thing that the discussion of reparations does is open old wounds and foster new resentment to further exacerbate the problem of racism. The country as a whole has moved on and has made progress though there is more to be made. Since there are no living slaves and any "proof" of damages is attenuated at best, the concept of reparations is misguided. Everything is NOT solved by throwing money at it, despite the attractiveness of a government-sponsored "everybody who is black wins" lottery.

Your mind reading skills are top notch. 😉

hmm.... i think Andrew has a very valid point here.

personally, i think the african americans have to grow out of it and realise their new identities. I see that a lot of them are becoming leaders of this country but not enough is being done i fear. the given fact that most of the music that their kids listen to is gangster rap does instill some doubt about their futures (but hey, white kids listen to modern rock too... brr...)

They need to stop talking about getting respect and actually working for respect. I watch BET and i see people complaining about not getting any respect but then i think about it and i wonder... what have u done to gain our respect? Somehow this generation of black kids in america just seem to think that they deserve respect becos of what their ancestors had to go thru due to slavery, etc etc.

I remember a skit in SNL where these few black guys walk all over their employer simply becos they could recite the speech that lincoln made or something like that. i wonder how much truth is in that skit.

oh well, now that the blacks are asking for money, maybe they will give some to the chinese, koreans, native americans, and the countless number of people that the white people used to control. Hey, didn't those cowboys kill a lot of people? heh.

As many agree, the allure of acquiring free money is tough to ignore. Even though I am Black and may possibly benefit should fund actually materialize, I just wonder what will monetary reparations solve. Sadly, I have yet to come up with an answer.

Andrew,

You missed one category; women. They were second class citizens in this country for far longer then any of the immigrant groups you outlined. I think all females should get a check from Federal Piggy.

<< Next month, a new California law will require insurance companies to disclose any slave insurance policies they may have issued. >>

Huh? What EXACTLY is the point of that? The Guilty White Liberals are going to destroy race relations in this country with all this BS.

Russ, NCNE

the majority of this country's population are immigrants- most of which never owned slaves of any kind.
i came to this country 20 years ago after years of persecution in cuba. i escaped on a cargo ship in a box that could barely fit a small child. i lived for years as an impoverished child in honduras where my only meal was bread and cheese around 5 in the evening.
i see no resolve in paying slaves or people that have been discriminated against. i also feel that the only solution is for those of us who have been persecuted to rise above the challenge and rejoice in our victory for we have truly faced adversity.

Dammit! How can there be reparations for slavery when, in this christian world we live in, clearly says it is ok to own slaves???

"Slaves, be obedient to those who are your earthly masters, with fear and trembling, in singleness of heart, as to Christ...."
..........Ephesians 6:5

OR

"Let all who are under the yoke slavery regard their masters as worthy of all honor, so that the name of God and the teaching may not be defamed. Those who have believing masters must not be disrespectful on the ground that they are brethren; rather they must serve all the better since those that benefit by their service are believers and beloved."
..........1 Timothy 6:1

BoberFett,

Typical atheist bigot. They can't resist attacking Christians even if it means trolling with a post completely unrelated to the thread topic.

Russ, NCNE

It's pretty sad, isn't it Russ? They're scared little people who lash out at anything and everything, hoping that one of their wild swings will make contact. I wonder what they're so scared of?

<<..HE [Robert L. Brock] CONTENDS that black people are eligible for special tax rebates and, if they pay him $50 to fill out a claim form, they will one day collect a half-million dollars in compensation for all that slavery and state-sanctioned discrimination stole from African Americans...>>

It does have something to do with this thread...the correlation between slavery and religion.

BTW, I am not a bigot. I am not dedicated entirely to my own opinion. And I surely do not go trolling on this board.

<< .? The disproportionate numbers of blacks who are in prison, undereducated or living in poverty are all today?s victims of slavery, he says. >>

do you hear this folks?? Personal responsibility has turned out to be a fluke, totally dead concept, do whatever you want, rape, pillage, steal, its ok. its not your fault anymore!! Call this guy for an excuse note!!

Red: I wasn't entirely worked up until I read that piece wherein it stated that the idea is gaining acceptance. That did it. We have one of the most prosperous times in our nation's history as a result of the explosion of the internet (now somewhat unraveling), and the yearning for free money is rising. If that doesn't say anything about the freeloader mentality of those nuts then I don't know what does.

Russ: Very true about women. They were considered chattel right along with slaves. They seem to be doing pretty well for themselves now, however, and aren't requesting payments from the government. Federal Piggy, I like that. 🙂

Dedphul: STFU, would you please? While the Bible may contain what you have written, taking it out of its historical context is about as stupid as you could make it. Of course it mentions slavery because that was commonplace 3000 years ago. Please quote some recent Christian literature, whether it be Papal or Protestant, which supports the notion of slavery. Please. We're waiting.

Oh, nothing? Piss off then, troll.

Also, people might notice that I distinctly do NOT use the term "African American". I find it ludicrous and inaccurate as well as grossly idiotic in some cases -- such as when Nelson Mandela was called an African American by a news cast last year (seriously). I would really like to see a white South African emigrate to this country and subsequently call himself "African American", to the point of checking that category on government and other forms. It would be entirely accurate and beautifully ironic for him to do so. Talk about screwing up a quota. Just a sidenote.

I said nothing pertaining to any group, just poking fun at one particular person, actually, mr Robinson. I thought It was pretty funny. What it boils down to is brock is just trying to make a few bucks on a cause he knows he can gather mass amounts of support on. If he really cared, it would be pro-bono.

?We all deserve reparations,? offered April Wilson

?I have been hearing about this thing for a long time,? Harold Coney, 50, a farm worker and logger said after buying a claim form. ?I?ve been through hell making the white man rich. Now I want my money, interest and everything.?

Money for nothing....
