Take a look at this article on MSNBC.com which is from the Washington Post and discuss the reparations movement (about which I posted several months ago after watching a panel discussion on it). Unbelievable. Here's the best part:
HE [Robert L. Brock] CONTENDS that black people are eligible for special tax rebates and, if they pay him $50 to fill out a claim form, they will one day collect a half-million dollars in compensation for all that slavery and state-sanctioned discrimination stole from African Americans.
That's right -- "I'll help you -- now give me your money!" And, if Johnnie Cochran is involved, you KNOW it has to be legitimate.
Sure, the allure of free money is wonderful, but who is going to pay for it? The US federal government isn't responsible nor are the majority of the people in this country. Perhaps the reparationists should pursue the descendants of the slave traders, presumably in the Netherlands, Britain, Spain, France, Italy, the West Indies and Africa. Or, they could levy against assets of the Confederate government -- Confederate war bonds, anyone?
This country absolutely amazes me sometimes.
