So, how many of you guys have Fallout 4? How is that game technically? 64-bit and DX11 correct? Did they finally upgrade to AVX or even SSE, or are they still on FPU-hardware era X87?
I don't know the technical details, but it's a pretty game. Personally I think the best modders' texture packs are prettier, but Fallout 4 has amazing draw distances and comparatively little noticeable pop-in. Up close, though, its textures sometimes look low res.
 
It will be a nice update for those who never modded their Skyrim to look like that (or similar to it). I'll definitely give that update a try, but I'll do it with Mod Manager, I wouldn't have another choice otherwise (since I do have a 'vanilla' non-modded Skyrim profile). However, if for some reason that update conflicts with almost any mods I've installed I'll have to pass (but I highly doubt that game-play related mods would conflict). But yeah, if some people around still never played Skyrim at all, or if they did but never bothered with modding (or graphics-related modding) then that's going to be a good opportunity to jump in.

Its a whole another software program in your steam library. Mods usable for Skyrim Special Edition will probably have to be specifically made for it.

I guess I dont remember how Skyrim is vanilla, but even modded wise, draw distances and pop-in are some of the biggest problems for me, with the quality of textures being less important, as many of them are sufficient. And more or less in all games, I always go for more draw distance over more graphical quality.
 
VR support would have been the candle on the icing. But with the mods and texture packs I have, it already chugs at 30fps. I suspect it will also break some mods.

Doesn't anyone else think they should have just remastered Morrowind instead? Either way, they really need to do a completely new engine or maybe make use of Tech 6, I'm sure they could modify it to support an open world.

Fallout 4 VR is apparently coming, so we might see Skyrim VR in the future. But this release is not VR, just remastered.

They say it'll "mostly" work. SKSE will obviously need updating. I guess it'll just depend on how "deep/intergrated" the mod works.

I agree. It's very immersion-breaking to top a mountain, look down into a sweeping valley, start down the other side, and then have huge buildings suddenly spring into existence - blocking things you could see just a moment ago.

This. I would rather play on the lowest graphics setting if it meant greater draw distance and no pop-in crap.
 
Seems like a total waste of resources for an old game that already has a mountain of mods that make it look a lot better than it did. Why not put that into a new IP instead of an old title.

This is all speculation, but I'm guessing it's work or research they had to put into the next Elder Scrolls anyway, or possibly one of the coders' pet projects. If they found it could easily be applied to the older game then why not? Put a few months of spit polish on it and push it out the door. Practically free money if it boosts sales on the older game and drums up even a little additional interest in the sequel.

Actually it isnt going to be much different than OpenMW, since for both projects, they are probably mostly reusing most of the old data.

Meh, im sure this is a really nice "upgrade" for console kiddies, but on the PC version mods have fixed everything that was wrong with the game. Hopefully its better than I thought, but im imagining this being another case of Metro 2033 vs Metro 2033 redux, which was entirely useless and added basically nothing new of value to the game.
 
They have said that most mods will work with it but not all. Meaning many mods will need to be updated to work with the special edition. I just read that today.

Damn really? I was thinking about getting it whenever I replay 2033 again. Guess I'll have to check out some comparison shots to see if the graphical fidelity is noticeable enough for me to get it or not.

Actually I kinda wanted to check out 2033 redux with VorpX. They say it works pretty well, I can only imagine how much more immersive it'll be in VR, even if it's not perfect.

watch next is gonna be fallout series remix... and then TES4 remake, because the guys at bethesda forgot how to make a good rpg game...

Xbox One and PS4 players don't have Skyrim at all, and console players are finally getting Skyrim with mods. How is it more important for PC players?
 
Considering this update is probably more important for PC players than console players, I have to disagree.

This update is least important on the PC. The reason people are so interested in it is that it's Skyrim and many of the posters here have spent hundreds of hours in it already and this update has the potential to drive them toward another 100. The main question is whether the update will surpass vanilla+mods.

The PS4/XB1 are the main reason the update is even happening; therefore, PC is of least importance. The fact that Bethesda is offering it for free for all who purchased the game+expansions should highlight that. They are planning on the vast majority of income to come from console gamers.

I think its great thread fodder though. I'm excited about it.

Its most important on PC because PC is the most important platform, the platform that will last the longest, and the platform with the most potential for modding. The fact that Skyrim is being updated to 64-bit is far more important than anything else, including graphics, new content, or some limited modding on consoles. The only other changes of huge importance that Bethesda could do is changing the Papyrus engine, or updating the code from X87 to SSE or AVX, both of which just might be possible. Since it seems to mostly transferring the Fallout 4 code to Skyrim, some changes to the Papyrus engine seem a given, although apparently they are not that big of changes.
