1. Do I need to have played any of the other games to ENJOY Skyrim?

2. Why is everyone so excited about it?

3. Is it an MMO, an RPG, a shooter?

4. Is there a monthly fee?

Any other pertinent info I need?

1. No

2. Elder Scrolls games are "epic". - Tons of content to explore, and the user community created mods always add/fix/improve the games far beyond what you get in the box.

3. Sandbox/RPG - You can do whatever you want. You can even ignore the main story/quest completely. If you are the type of player that wants a solid framework that guides you through the story of the game with side quests for added fun/flavor (like Dragon Age for example), you may not like an Elder Scrolls game.

4. No monthly fee - You will be charged for DLC as it is produced and released if you decide to buy it.

Thanks Fellas!

After my SWTOR weekend I may just have to give it a try!

do you like to bug test? better yet, do you like to develop unofficial patches for the bugs? If so, Skyrim is for you!

I love these type of responses...

I love your types of questions...

But in all seriousness, about what kind of game Skyrim is you could have found it in seconds with a simple research from your favorite search engine.

Then the other questions, you could find answers to them in a couple minutes but hey what the hell i'll answer some:

The Elder Scrolls is an old series of RPGs. The trademark of this series is huge open worlds where you can do whatever you want as long as you're willing to pay for the consequences (like attacking a city guard or stealing in daylight). You roam the land in search of adventure or simply something to do, and you'll have plenty to do.

You fire up the game and enjoy the ride.

That is ridiculous comments.

You do know that people without issues are not posting to tell others that their games work great?

You may be one of those that got plagued with bugs but don't generalize.

Elder Scrolls is the typical sandbox game. You sort of do what you want. X3:Reunion/Terran Conflict would be the space sim equiv. There is enough tools to run around and do things and create your own fun, yet, there are stories/quests to follow if you want to.

Typically the game is action RPG. You don't roll dice so much like many other RPGs, but rather get into the mix, much like a game like Borderlands. You click the mouse to swing your sword or to cast your fireball. You hit depending if you actually hit the person (within melee range, or your aim your fireball on the screen and hit the target by properly leading them)... Not because you rolled an 18 or higher on a 20 sided dice.

It's almost the sword/arrow/magic version of Borderlands, but has a larger scope. Borderlands is "tiny" and concentrated compared to an elder scrolls. But the games are sort of similar but in a different theme. Elder Scrolls feels like an RPG game, but you play it as if its an action game...

The scope and "feel" of the game is more epic... Where you know you aren't going to finish the game in 4 hours and its non stop action packed. Typically there is alot of downtime, and exploring. You will feel like noob in a large world where you have to figure out whats going on and take a certain path.

Here is a quest walkthrough from Oblivion the last Elders scrolls, and as you can see, you have different options:

1.You are confronted by Glarthir; he tells you to meet him behind the Great Chapel of Julianos at midnight.
2.Meet him, and he'll share his thoughts about a conspiracy against him. He identifies Bernadette Peneles as a spy.
3.He instructs you to monitor her actions without her knowing your presence.
4.Speak to a guard about Glarthir, and they'll comment on his mental instability. You are to report to a guard if he gets too suspicious.
5.Return to Glarthir with your findings, and he'll give you 150 gold. He'll then tell you to do the same with Toutius Sextius. Return again, and he'll give you another 150 gold if you report that Toutius is not spying on him or if you claimed that Bernadette wasn't spying on him. Your reward will be 200 gold if you confirm Glarthir's suspicions about both Toutius Sextius and Bernadette Peneles. Then, he'll tell you to monitor Davide Surilie.
6.After monitoring Davide, you will get 300 gold and Glarthir will tell you to kill all the "spies". If you accept, he promises 1000 gold for your troubles. Each target will make an attempt to alert authorities, so expect minor bounties. (Though Frenzy spells come in handy during this stage of the quest.) If you have told him that all three were not spying on him, he'll attack you instead.
7.After the killings, return to Glarthir who will be very relieved and reward you.

Option 1: Follow the quest exactly, find out there are no spies, the guy goes berserk on you, you kill him, but get some money in the process.
Option 2: Turn him into a guard, get no bounty but no deaths occur.
Option 3: Kill these "spies" (which are figments of his imagination) and you get into trouble as they are innocent people, but get the most rewards.

During this quest you literally have to follow these people around watching their daily duties, farming a field, walking to the tavern to get a bite to eat, etc etc etc. Its very long, and could take hours of time doing the quest.

If it is anything like Oblivion, then the gameplay if you are a magic based character is very much like a shooter.

The only thing you need to remember with Bethesda games is that if you run across something in the game that annoys you, chances are there's a mod out there that fixes it. Not to mention the tons of new content and features that also comes with the mods.

Oh another question...

Since it is so sandbox, does it ever end?

If you followed the story, and after did all the side stuff and played say...3 hours a day, how long might it take you to finish?

You dont "finish" there is no end entirely, you can finish the main quest, but there will always be a side quest you can do.

You have to remember there will be mods and expansion packs for this game down the road, but this preview should give you an idea of gameplay, playing time etc....http://www.computerandvideogames.com/324352/previewsthe-elder-scrolls-v-skyrim-163-minutes-27-seconds-with-a-300-hour-game/ .

Players like myself like to explore every area and leave no quest or stone unturned, playing time is as long as it takes and more ;).

You could easily put hundreds of hours into Oblivion if you went around doing all the side stuff. I have to assume Skyrim will be very much the same since it's suppose to have even more content. Now the main quest line won't be anywhere near that long, no idea how long that is as it can be hard to quantify. For instance you could in theory just blast through Oblivions main story and be done in a few hours, but you'd miss everything else on the side.

I really don't understand how someone who regularly posts on this forum could know so little about Skyrim, or the long-lived Elder Scrolls series in general, for that matter.

I have no interest in MW3, whatsoever, but I still know it is a shooter and I know that it is part of the CoD series. I know that much simply by cultural osmosis.

I'm a TALKER, not a researcher...

I want to engage people, not SEARCH boxes...

If you want talk about what I do, great, if not, move onto the next thread...

Do a search on UNREAD POSTS...grin.

I was talking to my coworker about the game today and he told me that on his Xbox account, it says he has spent 380 hours on Oblivion... But he said he restarted and played differently a few times.

So, in otherwords. You'll get sick of the game and quit playing before you run through all the content typically.

I put in roughly 80 hours into Oblivion on the Xbox just doing the on disk content.
