I downloaded Skype the other day to try it out. My buddy just called me long distance and it works great.
Clear and no feeback. Just like talking on a regular phone.

I use Skype several times a month with my brother who is a state away and with friends on both coasts. I love it and they love it now that I introduced them to it. Not a bad service at all! :)

Skype = phone over the internet.

It's kinda like roger wilco and what not, but it's better.

It's nice but it takes 16k of bandwidth on good quality setting. Needs a conference mode.

i have problems getting 'excited' over telephony via the internet, knowing there are things like netmeeting, cuseeme etc. out there for AGES already...so what's the big deal with that ?
Netmeeting etc. is around since the mid 90s....i guess it's all just marketing and hyping something so it sounds 'new' for the less technical savvy/geeky people ;)

Since it's made by the Kazaa folks, is it filled with spyware??

Ouch. Hadn't thought of that... :Q

Neither had I. It is a really valid point though. They might even record part of what you say, or filter your convo through a rudimentry word grabber and employ target specific advertising! Nothing is free, this might cost you your privacy.

I tried it once a couple of weeks ago, it was surprisingly good. I'd say a little better than NetMeeting at its default settings (you can tweak NM a little). Personally, I was wearing Sony MDR-V6 and my buddy and I both used some cheap computer mics. It's kinda tinny sounding.

Note that you become like part of a "super-node" for it to work.

If I remember correctly, this doesn't include spyware (I'm pretty sure the website shouts about that). They also have a PPC version, which I installed but haven't had a chance to try yet...thanks for reminding me.
