Wow, i've been using this app all morning on and off and its working SUPERBLY! Much MUCH MUCH better than Fring ever did. Fring always seemed to have echo and lag issues, Skype sounds EXACTLY the same as talking through the phone normally. This will definitely help out with my cell phone bill, rock on!

So can I call someone else's actual phone, or do they have to have skype too?

Man, I'm considering dumping my Bell phone when my contract is up.

I've got a 1st gen iPod touch right now, but I could get a 2nd gen and sell this one and then go for skype.

So tempting.

We had Bell through my family's business but their service is just horrible. I have my iPhone through Fido. They have good customer service and I've rarely had to wait forever on hold when dealing with them. I pay $45/mo with 200 weekday minutes, free evenings & weekends, 50 texts, and 500mb data. More than enough for me. I think they changed some of their plans though. The new ones aren't as good as the old ones, even if they don't have the system access fees. Not as many minutes for the same price.

If you have skype out minutes or a subscription plan, you can call actual phones. Subscriptions are like $2.95/mo for unlimited calls, or you can dump $10+ into your account for skypeout minutes, its like $.02/min or less.

Both, but you have to pay for a regular phone account to call people. It's significantly cheaper than a cell phone bill - Unlimited US & Canada for $3 a month or Unlimited World for $10 a month. The only two downsides are that you have to be on Wifi and you can't make emergency calls (but you have a cell phone if you're using the iPhone...). More info on pricing: (there are other plans like pay-as-you-go, but for $3 a month for unlimited...lol)

You can also get a discount if you pay ahead. I just signed up for Unlimited US & Canada for $29.50, which works out to about $2.50 a month. Call quality is FABULOUS. I am VERY impressed!

Our plan is pretty decent comparatively I guess. We have 2 phones on a family plan. 200 weekday minutes but the ones between my wife and I don't count. Voicemail/caller ID, evenings/weekends, 500 long distance minutes a month in Canada (her parents live long distance), some amount of free texts which we never go over, and no data plan as we don't use it (no iPhone or anything like that). With all the bullshit taxes, fees, access fees, fee access surcharge, 911 whatevers and such it's about $95/mo.

Skype would rock that though.

For Canadian users:

Open iTunes, log out of your iTunes account.
Go to the App store in iTunes and select US as your country
Find a free app (Remote from Apple is a good one) and click on it to get the app
It'll prompt you to create a new account. Do so. Select "none" for your payment method and enter a bogus US address.
Download the skype app. Sync to your iPod/iPhone.
Log out of your new iTunes account. Log back in to your Canadian one.

What about receiving calls? Can I receive a call through Skype to my number?

You can get a skype number yes, and you can receive calls yes. However, right now iPhone OS 2.2.1 doesn't support push notifications, so your skype will only ring if skype is running. OS 3.0 will incorporate push notifications, so hopefully you'll get a push notification that someone is calling you via skype.

Since my company works internationally...we use Skype regularly to reduce costs. This feature is great.

Maybe I'm missing the point...a phone app for a cell phone?

edit: WTF? How the hell did I end up in, of all places, the Apple forum?

/sneaks quietly out of the room.

Unlimited US/Canada is $30 a YEAR, provided you call on a Wifi connection. Think of how much your phone bill is now versus $30 a year. You could replace your landline and reduce a lot of minutes if you did long phone calls at home and save a TON of money! I bought the year-in-advance package for $30 and changed my phone plan - I'm saving $330 a year now

Can't wait for the 3.0 software so that Skype can ring even when it's not running...

Yeah, because skype isn't allowed to offer phone numbers in Canada (dumbass rules), I'm hoping google voice can. Then I can get a google voice number, and use my US skype number behind it.

That would be really awesome! I love Google :)

Resurrecting an old thread here. Now that a gimped version of Skype-In-less version for iPhone is available in Canada, does anybody think it's worth paying for?

What are you talking about paying for? Skype?

It depends. You can use it to make cheap calls out, but people won't have a single call/receive number for you. Depends on your situation really. It'd probably be great for students away from home or something.

Yah, I meant the long distance package. I decided to give it a try anyway. Seems to work well. I'm doing some group projects for college so it will come in handy when I have to phone them since a couple of them live out the opposite end of Toronto.
