Skype for iPhone: Background VOIP is a go!

I like the idea that I can give out my Skype # now and be able to take calls regularly on it. That was a problem before. Actually what I'll probably do is give out my GV # and just have it route to Skype about 70% of the time.

Yes - same here. FYI - you can set your GV # to forward to your Skype number, and then Skype lets you set a custom caller ID (you have to buy Skype credit for a minimum of $10 to set it up initially, since it's not part of the contract plan), so you can also set your GV # as your outgoing number. So now I just give my GV # out and use Skype the majority of the time.

Skype is so-so over a 3G connection. Sometimes it doesn't want to connect consistently even on full bars. Sound quality goes to pot quickly as you lose bars. I don't think it works over EDGE, but I'm not 100% sure. Skype sounds better than a real phone when calling to a landline or cell phone, and Skype to Skype is uber clear.

Because of the 3G connectivity issues, it's not a full cell phone replacement yet, so I also have a cheap Verizon cell phone with low minutes on it for the road. Then I use my GV # for both Skype and Verizon. Non-technical people would probably hate that solution (having 2 devices) but I'm a nerd so I love it :awe: My cell phone bill is less than 50% of what my iPhone bill was.

Now if they would just add Bluetooth headset support...

Awesome.. thanks for the tips!

I think I'll work on that this weekend. My iPhone bill isn't too bad now.. We switched to the 200MB plan on our Family Plan and it's around $90/mo now. We barely use 100MB of data as I work from home and my wife is a teacher who works like 10 min away.. although we've been on vacation this month and we've almost hit our limit, but that's going to be rare.

Not happy about the voice quality over 3G, but that's to be expected. 3G is very wishy-washy it seems.
