Skipping Windows Logon

Hi,

First off, I'm using Windows XP Professional, and I'm the only user on this PC. Anyways, at one time, when Windows would boot up, it would not prompt for user selection and would load the desktop. Then, I installed Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 (was a requirement for a program I installed). After I installed that, I noticed that when booting up Windows, it now prompts for me to select a user. Since I'm the only user, this is annoying and I'd rather the computer just boot to the desktop automatically.

Now, I did a search on the MS site and found TweakUI, which does have a setting to "automatically logon" upon start-up. It works if I apply the setting and reboot, but if I power down, the next time the computer is turned on it reverts back and prompts me to logon again.

I'm wondering if anyone has had a similar problem. How can I make this setting hold, even after shutting off the system?

I didn't read through them, it was just a quick google search. I've answered this question probably a dozen times here on a Anandtech. Do a search. If I had brought my handy dandy USB memory stick thingy, I'd copy and paste the answer, but I seem to have misplaced it. 😱

Awesome, thanks a bunch. Typing "control userpasswords2" at run prompt and unchecking "users must enter user name and p/w" solved it for any others wondering. Powertoys/TweakUI == garbage for not being able to do that. 🙂

control userpasswords2 was what I was going to suggest. BTW, this works the same in XP Home as well.
