I was playing a game on my AthlonXP/Radeon 9800SE system with a Microsof PS2 optical mouse and all of a sudden I'd lose the mouse pointer. Sometimes this happens during normal Internet browsing. I saw a little bit of lint on the mouse and I wiped it off. What could be the cause for this jump mouse.

Crappy mouse. I had the same issue. At first I used an old 400 dpi optical, it worked great. Then I changed the table and the pointer started to 'dance'. If you got a low-resolution mouse and the table isn't completely smooth (even if you have a mouse pad), you're going to need to get at least a 800dpi optical. I got a newer Logitech optical mouse with 800 dpi sensitivity and the problem disappeared. Annoyed me as hell too. Good luck!
