Skiiers: How important are poles?

Ns1

No Lifer
Buying new(er) equipment, want to know how important poles are? I have a (very) old pair that I'm using and want to know if it's worth the upgrade or not.

I learned to ski without my poles, I'm like Ameesh, when I first started using them I didn't know what to do with them. You get used to them.

They're not a nessecity though.

edit: you push yourself to the ski line... like roller blading or ice skating, it's basically the same way you move on ski's.

Amen to that. Call it a false sense of security, but I will not go skiing without them. But I do think they help with balance.

poles are just as important to skiiers as rods are to fisherman

don't underestimate the importance of your rod or pole

After you accidentally pass over the edge of a cliff, you get more style points for flailing your arms with nice ski poles as you scream during the decent to your death. There's a 1 style point deduction for poles that don't match the skiis in such a situation.

Otherwise, for just going down the hill, the poles really aren't that important.

As soon as I get my new ski's, I'm gonna give it a try w/o poles. I don't really use em too much, and I feel they're more than a hassle if anything, so we'll see how that goes.

The only reason I EVER used poles is because the Ski Patrol requires them. Not for style, but as tools.

The only use a real skiier has for them is for pushoff, and timing on moguls. A beginner uses poles to push yourself along (you don't need poles for that) and to get up after you fall.

Poles are just one more thaning I have to cut out of your body when you have a nasty crash. I had to carry a pipe cutter in my tool pack when OD.

i learned without, you can do it without poles, it just feels different. but i dont ski anymore (14 years of skiing)

i now snowboard

I use them all the time. I dont think I would go skiing without my poles. Try skiing deep powder without poles. Its not nearly as easy. Beign able to plant poles when doing jump turns makes it alot easier.

My poles have been bent and rebent many times over. They are mostly straight and still hold my weight. If some lowlife scum didnt steal them (and my 169 Solomon Xscreams) then I would still be using them.

True, really anybody who is beyond the true beginning stage should have poles. People who say you don't need them have never been down something called, "steep 'n deep." E.g down a slope that has barely enough incline to stop you from going out in thin air, and at the same time skiing through several feet of powder. In that case poles are a vital tool to help setup turns, and how you pivot around a corner. As someone else also said in the thread poles are also useful for bounce/turn timing on moguls.

Edit: Unless you want untra thin poles, which would require graphite poles, as long as your current ones fit they should be fine.
