sketchy situation cashing a check?

So I had a $100 check, and I wanted to cash it. As I usually do, because I don't have a checking account, I have a friend cash it, or my rents, if they are available. I sign the back, write "pay to the order of XXXX" and he signs. I've done this many times, and never had a problem with it, but today they took down his Driver's Licence number.

A little sketchy, because its never happened before. Anyone know why they would do this? We weren't too worried, but it's jsut wierd, because we've done this many times and this is the first time they've taken down his Driver's licence number.

Thanks!

Why don't you just get a checking account or savings?

Seriously, open an account, it's not a bad idea. Just look for a student deal or something so there are not fees associated with it, or if you 'rents have a company w/ a credit union open an account there.

There is a number of reasons why someone would not want a bank account. . .

1. They move often.
2. They are under mom and dad's pocketbooks.
3. They don't make much - why bother?
4. Credit people are after them and could seize any money they have in there at any given time. . .
5. Divorce. . .

I'm sure there are other reasons. . .

I probably will soon open an account soon before I go off to college (next year), but until then, my parents just don't want me to have a checkings/savings account. Nothing I can do about that...

So anyone have any clue why they'd take a Driver's licence number? It seems kinda funny.

Just as I predicted - Reason # 2 of my above post. . .

Yes they took a driver's license number so that if you were trying to rip them they can find you lateer. Nothing to worry about unless you were trying to rip them . . .

Relax unless you printed the check yourself 🙂

All right cool. We were discussing it trying to figure out why they'd do that, because it's never happened before and we've done it many times.

Thanks!
