Skateboard help

I need some information on brand/type of skateboard for my 13 year old. I realize that you might not skateboard, so maybe ask your children?

My daughter wants a board. I have no idea what the "cool" brands are. I want to get it for her, so I hope someone can help me pick a decent brand/price.

Does she really skate or is this summat that's more of an entry level board?

If she's really into it, put the board together for her; I prefer ceramic bearings, black magic grip tape, Venture trucks... Get her softer wheels (i.e., some for longboarding) so that her ride is smoother.

If she's just beginning, go for any generic board and at the very least, replace the bearings and wheels. If she's just going for the "name", you can search for Birdhouse, AVI, Enjoi... but I would really recommend putting it together for her.

i was actually looking at a "rip-board" for my son. i know nothing of this stuff either.

is CSS around? or even go to a local skate shop and see if they do gift certs. that way she can put the board together herself.

Just go to the local skate shop and have them fix you up. Expensive does not equal better.

Zoo York decks are pretty sick. as far as trucks go, Tensor is pretty nice.

That's a negative, Early 90's skaters rocked hardcore:
New Deal, Plan B (first incarnation), H-Street, World Industries, and most important decks that had a nose as well as a tail.... could go on for a while.

O.P. you could also just get a naked deck. They are just as good as a normal deck, a little cheaper in cost, sans the pretty graphics that the pro wants on his board.

That's a negative. Freestyle boards were of that design long before the 90s. You're just talking about the merge of 80s power skating into the finesse/freestyle of the 90s.

In the 80s kickflips were actually difficult, but I had not problem with huge air, gnarly...entire ramp grinds, etc. Ahh, the good old days.

Well, I was an old school street skater, and skated into those 90s days (my skating career ended permanently in '93 after a badly broken ankle), and I really liked those early streetstyle boards. Those "nosetail" and slimmer boards were a big improvement IMO. And in order to keep the airs huge and the grinds gnarly, I just stuck with same larger wheels, trucks, and risers as before. And IIRC, the trend went back to larger wheels and risers afterwards, right?

my last setup was black label deck, tensor trucks, black magic tape, spitfire wheels, speed demon bearings, shortys hardware. It all depends on what you like, I've skated things from powell to black label(my favorite) girl, and generics. Tensor trucks are my favorite and I was partial to spitfire wheels. Like one person suggested, maybe go with a gift card so she can get what she wants, also check out CCS for skateboarding stuff, its where I used to get most of my stuff.

I thought Sector 9 only did longboards?

Edit: As some above have mentioned, CSS could be the way to go. If that doesn't work then a local skate shop. This thread makes me wish I had my board with me right now. 🙁

Gave it to a kid one day...it needed new griptape, but it was in decent shape.

Wow, holy crap, I'm in the exact same boat - my daughter is 13 and looking for her own board....she's tired of riding dad's zorlac/AW's and wants her own. I was just going to get her a complete from CCS, they have some decent deals. The shops here locally want too much for the same setups. She's not advanced enough (by her own admittance, not mine!) to warrant a badass setup....she'll be happy with something new and hers!

Wow, holy crap, I'm in the exact same boat - my daughter is 13 and looking for her own board....she's tired of riding dad's zorlac/AW's and wants her own. I was just going to get her a complete from CCS, they have some decent deals. The shops here locally want too much for the same setups. She's not advanced enough (by her own admittance, not mine!) to warrant a badass setup....she'll be happy with something new and hers!

If she's a beginner get her a bigger board and teach her proper position/weight. Whatever you do don't tighten the hell out of the trucks or she'll never learn. Her lighter weight will need what to you seems like really loose trucks.

In most cases a parent would be the worst teacher.

Let her hang out with some skater friends or a skate park.

IMHO to get the basics down of skateboarding you do it yourself and learn all the things that can get you in trouble when you are higher and faster like how a 1/4" pebble can stop your board at 30mph+.

Unfortunately there is no seat belt.

don't forget to change the bushings to softer ones, too. i like blue doh dohs the best but i'm sure there are better ones out there.
