This game really surprised me and is a very nice change from the totally unrealistic Tony Hawk series. I am seriously considering picking it up after playing the demo.

Yeah it took me a bit to get used to the controls due to it being MUCH more realistic than tony hawk. but after a while it started to get pretty fun. I don't know if I'd buy it, but definitely rent.

I like it too. I just wish you could change the camera angel.

Definitely a GREAT change of pace from Tony Hawk. That game just got ridiculous. The best THPS IMO is the 2nd one on psx.

I'm shocked that EA actually came up with a good idea tht worked on their first attempt.

You are so right Beast. Tony Hawk 2 was a superior game, then they just started adding way too much shit to it, and now it is what it is. Very difficult to play the new ones if you know how things used to be. I miss the good ole days. I was the best THPS player in my entire dorm back then, and it was awesome to have other dorm's best players come over with all their friends and get their asses handed to them by me.

Better than Tony Hawk, but I still didn't care for it. I like progressing my character instead of being given a sandbox to play in.

you do progress your character, just not like tony hawk where in the end you have a guy with perfect stats in every category.

THPS is starting to revert back to somewhat realistic, but there are still too many 200ft gaps->80ft grind-> double backflip. Just gets old after a while. But playing skate and having it actually look like a skate video is pretty cool.

From what I understand, based on what I've read and watched in interviews, that is not the case. the only progression in the game is 'fame'.

I only heard about this game yesterday when I read the review on IGN (I haven't owned a console since the Genesis) - it definitely looks awesome. I only played THPS 2, 3 and 4 (all on the PC) but I hear that the series started..eh...sucking after that point. I don't mind the insanity of some THPS levels and the ludicrously complex combos but I guess nine iterations of is kinda pushing it.

The game looks like a crapload of fun and I hope it comes to the PC. EA likes to do ports, right? 😉

I just played the demo finally last night and wow I liked it a lot too. I'll be picking it up when it's 40 or under

And I also agree that THPS2 was the best...but on the dreamcast 😉

I've never been really into the Tony Hawk series. I remember playing a lot with Tony Hawk 2...didn't really get into later iterations that much. I played the skate Demo last Sunday and thought it was fantastic. Too many good games coming out to buy it right away...but I'll very likely be picking it up in 6+ months.

Just started playing this weekend.
LOVE it. Its what the TH series should have been from the ground up.
The one gripe I have is the same as purepeast's... the POV is crappy though its also what helps make the game great. Its nearly impossible to see what's coming up in front of you due to the POV and you often end up hitting a rail you never knew was there. Would be nice if you could rotate the camera up some or have your character more transparent or something....

All in all though LOVE the game

I really liked the demo, but I'll probably end up getting it when it's < $30 used. I really liked the controls though. I've never played the Tony Hawk series, but I expected a skating game to be nothing but "button mashing." That wasn't the case with Skate at all. I really liked the controls.

I'm wondering though, how is the game structured? Are you supposed to work your way up to be a pro skater, or are you just doing tricks trying to get points?

They should have called it Skate or Die.

Skate or Die was already created in the 90s

I love the game, but unfortunately it's buggy as all hell in some aspects. I've already beat it and obviously it told me a "beat all the pros" yet I don't have the achievement for beating all the pros. Another one is that I owned all the spots 1/4th into the game and it never gave me the achievement for that either.

The designers expected too much from the flickit system. It's a great system but not THAT good.

also, I hate you run into things and get stuck in between two flights of stairs, then you have to completely STOP and turn. I wish it was more like tony hawk in that aspect, where you just turn the body and he gets himself out of the crappy spot.

Other than that it's a great game and I loved it.

Hey thanks sherlock. 😛 It was actually the 80s. And it was developed and published by EA, who also developed and published Skate.

80s? Fucking hell I'm old.

Agreed... great in concept but pretty damn hard to master. You want to do a simply ollie and you end up doing a FS Shove-it or Kick Flip.

YES!!!

I disagree about the flickit controls. I think they are awesome. It was a great idea and actually makes it feel like you are doing something other than button mashing.

I agree with your second point.

I really love this game and hope EA improves it even more in the next one.....but knowing EA it'll be the same.

as for the point, you are building up cred by entering into different events and challenging other skaters in 'S.K.A.T.E.', and must beat them. As you progress, you move towards photo shoot opportunities for the two different magazines.

Just picked up Skate today. Been waiting a while for it and it totally slipped by me when it came out. Loved the demo and love boarding. Cant wait to play tonight!
