SK-6 Fan Replacement - Whats a good, quiet fan for this Heatsink?

Have the chance to buy an SK-6 from a friend for my new Athlon XP 2000+ machine. I currently have a generic heatsink/fan combo (Foxconn) which is extremely loud. The thing is that unless I pair the SK-6 up with a a quiet fan, there won't be much noise reduction.

You guys have any recommendations?

Also, I have a Gigabyte GA-7DX (AMD 760 chipset), and the chipset has both a heatsink (passive) and a fan mounted on top. If I disconnect the fan, will there be sufficient cooling?

well i have 3 sk6 hsf units so i'll try 2 help u. some ppl say to rotate an 80mm fan into a diamond shape so the sk6 clips will hold it. i don't like this as there may be some far off chance that the clip will obstruct the fan (it is in the realm of possibility) and if that happens and the fan stops u only have a few seconds to shut down b4 the cpu frys (unless u have a mobo that has emergency temp shut down). besides an 80mm fan (unless its a screaming delta) just doesn't deliver enough air to cool the sk6. IMO i think u should bypass the sk6 and get a fan of ur own. volcano 7+ is a good choice for fan speed control. but if u really want it maybe getting a 80mm to 60mm fan converter/adapter will be able to concentrate the air flow of an 80mm fan onto the right places on the sk6.

Thanks for the advice Duke, the prob is that I am not sure that using the volcano 7+ would be a step up in terms of noise reduction. From what I've heard from review sights, its somewhat loud. Also, I don't think it is AMD approved for Athlon XP 2000+ cpus. I'll probably stick with my current heatsink/fan combo.

Hopefully AMDs next lineup of cpu's, the Hammer line, won't have heat as such an issue, and won't necessitate users to use a jet engine of a fan to cool it.

I have a comp w/ an 80mm turned 45 degrees. I can tell you right now that there is no chance of the clips obstructing the fan blades unless the blades somehow fly off of the fan itself. The indentation of the clips should be outside of the corner of the fan...this leaves the flat bar of the clip holding the corner of the fan down.

It's like saying a fan grill will stop your fan from rotating...that's the kind of position the clip is in.

As far as enough air, it depends on what you are doing. My secondary system which is used for more office stuff gets an average of 40 degrees with the 80mm on. If you're doing any kind of overclocking or heavy usage of computer, I probably wouldn't go with this setup.

I agree that you should go with another HSF if you want quiet. The AX-7 is one of the best in terms of quiet vs. performance. The Volcano 7+ is up there and you can pick what you want by changing fan speed.

I put a 60mm panaflow H1A on there with the pcmods baybus, drops the voltage down when I'm going to sleep and computer is nearly idle.

Shaorinor, you have an OC'ed Athlon XP 1700+, so the temps of your cpu must be similiar to mine (2000+). You didn't mention what kind of 80mm fan you have on your SK6. I have some spare Panaflos L1As and would like to use it in this situation... Would a L1 be enough??? Also, the L1 doesn't have RPM sensing, would it even work here as a fan for my cpu?

ChefJoe, what processor are you running, and what is the CFM of that fan?

Sorry, it's a P3 1.1 100FSB CuMine. you can get the models with RPM sensors from www.digi-key.com Panasonic/Panaflow PDF
( To decipher the models, scroll down to v4mofo's description

[edit]forgot to look, the pdf says the cfm of that fan is a paltry 16.6... well, it's enough as long as I keep the sk-6's fins clean.

Personally, the most amusing thing is that digi-key will charge about $1.70 _less_ for an RPM monitoring FBA Panaflow yet all the online stores stock L1A, etc.... WHY???

Actually, my secondary system is an 1800+ that isn't o/c'd. The 80mm fan on there is an old Sunon that I had lying around from like 3 years ago. I was tired of the noise from the 60mm, so I threw that on there. Quiet and temps averaging in the 40s with decent air circulation through the case.

Like I said, if you aren't OC'ing, you can probably pull the 80mm trick off. But if you are or use your computer a lot to push your CPU towards full load temperatures, then I would get something else if you don't want to deal with the noise from the delta.

I'm running a lapped SK6 with a celeron/tualatin 1.1a at 1.48GHz @ 1.62 core voltage and the steady state temp is at 39C with 32C case using the quieter Sunon fan from 2cooltek. I could probably use a louder fan since the 60mm Sunon is drowned out by my 120mm intake fan and two 80mm output fans. My point is the Sunon fan is very quiet, but I don't know how hot your Athlon will run with it since it will be pumping out more watts that an overclocked celeron. You could give it a try and if it's too hot get a higher flowrate fan, fans are fairly cheap.
